This weekend I’ve been enjoying “June Bugs” on Cartoon Network (yeah, I’m a grown man who loves cartoons. I also go to the video arcade, Toys R Us, and the candy store on my day off. What’s it to ya?!).
Anyway, I’m getting really fucking pissed off at all the editing I’ve seen. Like that one where Bugs and Yosemite Sam run for Mayor, and at the end the town elects a “mare”. They edited out the part where Bugs & Sam play Russian Roulett.
Then there was another one where it’s under water. It used to have a fish that says “well, now I’ve seen everything” and blows his head off. They cut that one to shreds too.
Have people become so fucking pussified that they can’t handle a little cartoon violence? They’re cartoons for Pete’s sake! I could go on and on listing all the editing I’ve seen. They’ve cut out some of the best, funniest scenes. It’s absolute horse shit!
I’ve had it with the fucking wimpyness that has over taken this country!
I personally don’t care for retroactive editing (should I even bring up removing all references to/pictures of the World Trade Center? - nah; too much a sore spot still).
In my opinion, they should label Bugs Bunny et al as adult cartoons (or PG, or whatever), and quit chopping them up. They really aren’t for kids anymore, now that we’re enlightened and don’t want kids to see cartoon characters getting violently mangled anymore. But for the love of all that’s holy, leave them intact for us adults that want to see the cartoons from our violence-filled childhoods.
It’s not just violence that’s being edited out. Although to be fair, we did have a bit of success with this as most of the new DVDs have unedited shorts on them. Perhaps another drive to Cartoon Network might work just as well.
Yeah, that too.
There’s this one with Bugs and Sam where Bugs dresses first as a black guy playing the banjo, then as Abe Lincoln. Lincoln comes up to Sam and says “what’s this I hear about you whippin’ slaves?”. Sam sputters “But, but,…but…!” and Abe (Bugs) hands him a business card and says “Here…look me up at my Gettysberg address.” Anyone remember this one? Absolutely hillarious!
But I haven’t seen it played for many years, and I’m guessing they just won’t play it, or it had the living shit edited out of it.
They even edit Simpsons episodes now, but I think that’s to cut out 30 seconds or so for time constraints. It bugs me that people have to take all cartoons so seriously. They’re supposed to be funny not PC.
I always notice in simpsons when they leave out something, and I make a point to always tell my wife the part that is missing. (If I have seen it uncut prior of course)
It’s a treat for me to come across an airing of an episode that contains a scene that I hadn’t seen before. Makes watching reruns a bit more interesting.
When I got a Dish last year, I got into watching old Warner Brothers 'toons again, having not seen more than a vague handful in decades.
But before long, it was, as noted, immediately apparent that certain scenes were being taken out. Gunplay, in particular, as well as drinking from a bottle lablled with a “skull and crossbones” (in fact, some of the old Disneys on the “Ink and Paint Club” won’t even show drinking alcohol- you have to wonder why the "country mouse’ all of a sudden doesn’t have full control of his faculties) and so on.
You hear the Dynamite 'splode, but don’t see Wiley get scorched.
WTF? I watched these things, unedited, as a kid and it didn’t affect me a bit. Why, I’m so mad, it makes me want to go out and shoot something or drop an anvil on it.
“Tom and Jerry” has been edited so when the black lady is shown, it’s no longer obvious she’s a maid. I remember distinctly several shows where the Thin White Lady (natch) comes in and tells the Plump Black Maid (of course) to do this and that to get ready for the party, and oh yeah, keep the mice out of the food or the party’ll be ruined, etc. PBM is of course saying “Yess’m” and “no, ma’am” and so forth.
Don’t forget the Daffy Duck cartoon where he and Bugs are trying to confuse Elmer as to what “season” it is. Daffy gets his bill (usually deliquent ) blown off in many creative, yet humorous, ways.
Before I even opened the thread I knew you were talking about June Bugs. I’ve been watching it on and off all weekend.
I was watching some of the cartoons for edits, because I know that over the years a lot of the guns and shooting were edited out (such as the one pkbites mentioned, where the fish shoots himself at the end).
However, I caught one this morning where Bugs was giving a piano concert (“Rhapsody Rabbit,” perhaps?) and someone in the audience kept coughing. Bugs glared at the offender the first time. After the second time, he pulled out a gun and shot the coughing audience member. Was that left in because the person shot was offscreen?
I saw one today and was a little surprised they left in – not that I condone the editing, it’s just the sort of thing I think said editors might have edited. I digress …
Bugs was lobbying for an Oscar and he was showing his highlight reel. He threw some film cans to a guy and said, “Roll 'em.” The first thing that comes up is a deer head on the film screen, with the words, “Stag Reel”. Bugs jumps in front of the screen screaming, “Heeeeyy!” … and then to the camera, “Oops, uh, wrong film.”
And you know what else is great? Cartoon Network won’t show Speedy Gonzales cartoons because they’re “ethnically insensative.” Anybody want to take a guess as to what the most popular WB cartoon character is in Latin America? Yup, ole Speedy himself. Hell, in some places he’s practically a national hero! But we can’t show him here in the States because that might “offend someone.” I’m fucking offended that I can’t watch the goddamn cartoons!!!
It’s BS and I wager it’s turning many fans to the dark side or overseas . What ever happened to making a product that people want? Give us what we want!
As I understand it Speedy is still shown but only rarely. I think it may be a rating thing but I don’t really know.
Gee, I thought people would be happy that we couldn’t see Speedy Gonzalez cartoons. Especially the crappy ones from the 70’s, where Daffy is after him…
