First, I see what you meant here. But it’s really not valid to compare the two.
Sexual drive is a biological function of living things. It’s natural human desire to procreate. (At least for heteros) Whether there are images of sex has nothing to do with it. It’s a natural part of humanity.
Hate speech, however, CAN lead to violence against others. For years and years tolerence groups, PSA’s, etc have said that hate is taught, not inherent. And it could be curbed, if we could use our disagreements to find compromise and acceptance. Hell, the SDMB has helped me a great deal on a few issues examining and re-evaluating some long-held views.

The way I figure it, he was either talking about Laws, Rights, or Rules.
If it was about Laws, then I think the request was a reasonable one.
If it was about Rights, then the request wasn’t a reasonable one. Someone could say that we have a Right to free speech, but that doesn’t include X, Y, and Z. Another could say that it does. They could debate the practicality of allowing X, Y, and Z, but at its core their view of Rights would be an opinion.
If it was about Rules, such as the rules of the Straight Dope Message Board, then it’s clear that our freedom to discuss things has certain limits. (And, in my opinion, pretty good ones.)
Violence is as natural in humans as sex. The disconnect, as far as I’m concerned, is between hating and inciting. Believing that you can legislate away hate is, to me, dangerously naive. It is one thing to opine that Indians are worthless savages who cannot hold their liquor, and quite another to encourage people to find Indians and hang them from trees. Even within the former, there is a disconnect between fact and deceit. Were there a law, fully enforced, forbidding the initiation of both force and fraud, we who are peaceful and honest would be free to pursue our own happiness in our own way.
