As to Palestine/Israel/Hamas, I too get tired of the attitude that anyone criticising Israel only does so for anti-semetic reasons, or because we’re all a bunch of EU liberals. Objecting to civilians getting murdered while going about their day? What an anti Jewish handwringing European bunch of pussies we are! (And yes, my RO on blowing up civilians extends to Hamas as well.)

You shouldn’t take any offence. It’s one of those things they have to say, in order to keep up the current policies. Don’t mean nothing by it.

1. To continue the conflict for a few more decades until circumstances change enough for a renewed chance of peace.

or

2. That the Palestinians cast aside their religious extremism and realize that the only way they’re ever have their own country is to accept that Israel is here to stay and that they’re not going to get everything they want.

But doing nothing also plays into their hands. In fact, there’s nothing Israel can do or *not *do that Hamas can’t turn into a PR vctory. So why should we even care? They’ll believe what they want to believe, and there’s nothing anyone can do to change it.

The peace-loving Israeli government was forced to kill hundreds of people because otherwise a tiny percentage of Palestinians might continue to lob rockets that don’t kill or injure anyone. Obviously.

Oh really? What about the fact that in order for Israel to kill the Hamas members that launch these rockets they invariably have to end up killing Palestinian civilians because Hamas places many of their launch locations in places where they know they will enable their own people to die in order to drum up more support for their cause?

This is Hamas’ MO…hold up the dead babies from the hospital that got destroyed because that’s where Hamas launched their rocket strike from and say “Look what the evil pig Jews have done again! We must destroy them all!”

People with an interest in history often inquire how whole societies come to take part in frank evil. The studied answer is the same in each case: It begins with a story of imminent and unchangeable malevolence towards them. This is why it is important for rw Israelis to spread the falsehoods quoted above. Without that narrative it would not be possible to brutalise Israeli society and its supporters into the planned shape.

You can let them believe what they want to believe, and gradually talk them out of doing anything about it (by providing some alternative arrangement that in actual practice is acceptable to them). Ahmadinejad says Israel should be wiped off the map, but if I were Israeli I wouldn’t be scared of him.
