You’ve been by Upper Heyford? Good grief. When I was little, my family lived at RAF Croughton. We used to go to RAF Upper Heyford for hospital and picnics and the like.
SnakesCatLady… that’s hilarious. One of my mate’s snakes pooed on me once. It was like butter, gross!
Misnomer… I am Hippy Hollow elsewhere on the 'net, which freaks me out, because I think it would really weird me out if someone recognized me from another board!
Awww… this I found touching, especially since I was only a casual visitor of said Hollow. If I let it go, I’ll let you know. I was watching KVUE last time I was in town and they had a graphic that said “Hippie Hollow.” I was like, “You spelled it wrong!” Then I thought, maybe I spelled it wrong… :smack:
HA! What town do you live in, Chez? I went back to North Oxfordshire about five years ago and saw the M40 has now cut a swathe through the beautiful countryside. There’s a motorway services where Ardley was. I used to live at Croughton near Brackley, in Northants. Isn’t there a little “Stonehenge” in Chippy?
garygnu… I lived in Central Coast California and visited San Jose many times. If I’d seen the Happy Hollow sign I would have laughed out loud.
[QUOTE=Hippy HollowI used to live at Croughton near Brackley, in Northants. [/QUOTE]
[suffers small world syndrome] Just when did you live there? My family was there from about winter of 1968 through summer of 1972.
He is comparing his new name to one of Bilbo’s 13 companions. Considering that well over 100 million people have read the Hobbit, I think his statement was fair.
To the Op, I already changed my name and it fits well. I had a lot of fun with the vote to choose my new name. I think others had a lot of fun with it also.
Jim
Change my screen name?! And squander all the capital I’ve accumulated under it in the way of recognition and respect?
Seriously?
I guess “bumpybits” has a nice ring to it.
Ah Morgyn, a little after you. We lived near Lakenheath from 1975-1978, came back to the States for a spell, and went back to Heyford from 1981-1986. I think we got to Croughton in 1983 or 1984. 8 Fifth Street, to be exact. We lived right on the edge of the base so I could easily hop the fence and head to the Alfa Romeo shop in Aynho to drool over cars.
I went to school at Heyford for elementary and middle school, but then they opened a brand new school at Croughton for the last bit of middle school, and I started high school there.
What a cool coincidence!!!
I wasn’t really thrilled with my choice, but I couldn’t think of anything that really made me smile (and still can’t). And frankly, I’m used to being called YaWanna by my husband:
“YaWanna get me a drink while you’re up?”
“YaWanna (drop whatever you’re doing right now and) give me a hand with this?”
etc.
I’m quite secure in the knowledge that I chose exactly the right screenname.
I’ve gone by “Wyzardd” since I first used Prodigy back in… 94? 95? (something like that) I totally screwed up my registration here and couldn’t get “wyzardd”, which I apparently used once back in '01, and rather than read the sticky or contact TubaDiva I went with what I have, more of a joke than anything - “Bitter Bob” I’m called IRL
Decided that changing it back to wyzardd wasn’t worth the effort, but I did inform TubaDiva what had happened.
Yep. I work at a radio station, and for the past year my fellow on-air folks have tagged me Sunrazor after a promotional CD we got from what has to be the worst garage band ever. I pretended to like the CD as a joke, so pretty soon that’s what I was being called. The program director, who is also the morning show DJ (and my younger brother) recently flushed Sunrazor, however, and re-named me Prince of Dorkness. So maybe I’ll change my moniker here to Sunrazor. I like it.
Very nearly cooler than you think. We lived in 3 Fifth Street East. When I was there, there was a fair spread of field between us and a tree line. At the bottom of the field was a huge batch of stinging nettles that housed millions of lady bugs. We used to spend a lot of time catching and letting them go, and I got to be pretty much immune to the nettles. I had “pre-school”, if you can call it that, in Brackley, at St. John’s (it’s closed now–I think it was part of Magdalene). I went to the base school for 1st and 2nd grade. I didn’t like the American education system anywhere near as much as I liked the British, and I sometimes wonder how things would have turned out if I’d been able to stay in school there.
More on topic, I’ve been getting a bit tired of being Morgyn, but I can’t think of anything I’d like better. I feel very unclever at that sort of thing.
I mentioned it earlier, but for what it is worth, I started this thread with TubaDiva’s permission to elicit help in changing my name to something more interesting.
Time for a username change; please help me out with suggestions.
I then had this thread to vote on it.
It was a lot of fun, and I know of few other posters have done something similar.
I also noticed that a new member recently took on the name of the chicken of exeter. I think Sampiro was hoping for someone to take that username but now I do not remember and I cannot find it.

I live very close to Stow in Gloucestershire, a couple of miles from the Oxfordshire border. I go into Chipping Norton regularly because it is a working town with essential services such as a dry cleaner and a shoe repairer. Stow has a plethora of antique shops, the contents of which I don’t need.
Keith Moon used to own The Crown & Cushion in Chippy. That must have been a wild place in the 70’s. Simon Nichol of Fairport Convention lives there and can sometimes be seen having a pint or two in one or other of the town’s pubs. He was once on the opposing team in a pub quiz I was taking part in. They lost - not enough music questions apparently.
The Rollright Stones are a 5 minute drive from Chipping Norton. I haven’t much to add to the article except that I’ve tried to count the stones and failed.
If you want any more information you’re welcome to send me an email.
I used to live about 10 miles from Middleton Stoney, now I live about 10 miles from Hippy Hollow (the place, not the poster). Don’t you just love coincidences
Well, that’s just spooky, as I lived 10 miles from both Middleton Stoney and Hippy Hollow. Where did you live? And how did you end up in Austin or thereabouts? I have the Cold War to thank for both relocations, and I was quite pleased with both.
Chez Guevara - I’ve biked up to Stow and my hamstrings never forgave me. Awesome town.
Back to Chippy, apparently all kinds of musical history was being made at the studios there when I was a kid. Duran Duran, Level 42, and all sorts of bands recorded there, apparently. Of course it’s a little hard to pop round the local when you’re 13 and have no means of transport besides a crap Raleigh bike. Plus we had no internets to know this kind of stuff.
Interesting stuff on the stones…
Isn’t there a bizarrely named pub somewhere around there? Somebody’s Castle? I remember it because the sign had someone bludgeoning some dude on it and I thought, “well, if that’s what’s on the sign, God only knows what’s going on in the pub.”
Hmmm–an interesting question.
Maybe BoomalakaWee, if not SulkPotBenNagNag or TinTacPingFoo or RubDubBenThud–all names of some of my characters of all time.
I awoke last week with a brilliant user name in my head–alas, I cannot recall it now.
I like my name–I omitted one “R” in it to make it easier to spell and add a touch of who knows what to it. But, I am always open to suggestions.
I like names that are double entedres or puns or can be interpreted several ways. I don’t have one of those, but…
Re: Middleton Stoney and other English places: My grandparents came from England. How’s that for a small-world coincidence?
Back to the OP… After I joined with my present username, I found the username I wished I had thought of first and still rather want. It’s memorable, easy to say, and perfectly expresses something about my view of the world.
Unfortunately, Cartooniverse shows no sign of wanting to give it up.
[hijack]
And Stow is lovely.

I lived in the north end of Oxford. Work took me Austin. Just to confuse things, work is in Azeraijan
:dubious:
Just today I started thinking that Licked Aardvark would be a good name.
