Fuck you for not making ANY of the keys to the right of ‘=’,’]’,’#’,’/’ mappable!
As a left handed person (we exist, and we exist in higher numbers in technical fields) I map the direction keys to… gee… DIRECTIONS, the enter key to, ‘use’,‘enter’,‘action’. Numpad 0 to duck, numpad 1 to zoom or aim, ctrl to jump, and so on.
I have recently bought Dead Space. In this game NONE OF THOSE KEYS ARE MAPPABLE! So I have to try my best to find keys on the right side of the mappable area, so as to reduce the need to have my keyboard shoved way over to the right.
What’s so hard about making those keys mappable? Other games can do it. I reckon you just don’t like left-handed people and you want us to suffer. Did you get passed over for promotion by a leftie with superior brain power?
I’ve put this in the Game forum as last time I made a pit thread about a game I put it in the Pit, and was berrated accordingly.
I reckon gaming controls in games that don’t allow full keyboard mapping are a bit of a bitch for anyone. Have you looked at something like an Ergodex DX1 or Ideazon Fang? I started using gamepads because the keyboard takes up too much space on the tray, and using my right hand for button mashing while turning with the mouse isn’t practical with games like WoW and Fallout 3 which really require mouse-turning.
I’ve been using a Nostromo n52 for a couple years; I can’t imagine gaming without a programmable gamepad now. The only reason I don’t recommend a Nostromo specifically is I find it a little awkward to hold the forward control on the thumb movement pad, and still be able to key character abilities on the number pad. A friend of mine who has smaller hands has no problem though, so hand structure may be a factor.
Weird, I’m left-handed but I’ve used a default computer set-up my entire life - I even have a unilateral gaming mouse contoured for the right hand.
Nor have I ever personally met anybody who uses a left-handed configuration. Cool! But I totally agree that there’s no excuse for those kind of glaring flaws in GUI design.
I’m sure it’s more of a problem for lefties (my brother and my father are both left-handed, me and my mom are both right, so I was used to whacky set-ups for random things on the house comptuer growing up) but non-remappable buttons are a bitch for anyone. I personally remap several main functions in most games that I play on the PC (and even remap several on console games, most of the time). I have foreign and strange ideas on what I think should be standard, but remappable buttons always allow for that and should be standard on every game, period. It’s a glaring oversight if they’re not
KennyNet » Dead Space with Arrow Keys! has a file that remaps it to the arrow keys but better yet instructions on how to map it to whatever num pad keys you want.
I find the Num Pad better all around then WASD. ‘7’ for use ‘Enter’ for heal (or whatever is a good oh shit button) ‘+’ for reload ‘0’ for jump ‘.’ for duck with a ton of easy to reach keys for other various functions. Even if I was right handed I think I wouldn’t like the pyramid like setup that is the default in most games.
