Fuck Safari 5!

Safari used to be a decent web browser. The latest version is a piece of shit. First of all, it crashes and hangs up more than the old version. Aren’t new versions supposed to be better?

More importantly, for no reason, it will spontaneously decide to reload every window at once. This causes a number of different problems:

-it takes a bunch of time as my computer loads a bunch of pages at the same time
-old versions of webpages that have been updated are lost
-text typed into forums or other forms is lost
-I have to re-login to my webmail and sometimes other sites
-Youtube videos start playing when I don’t want them to, and I lose my place in Youtube clips or other videos that are already playing.
-if my Internet connection is down, I lose everything and get a bunch of error messages

This could even potentially cost me money. Shopping sites often say “DO NOT RELOAD THIS PAGE” as it could apparently result in double charges.

Why in the name of God did they think this was a good idea? And why can’t I turn off the reloading?

I’m going to try out Chrome pretty soon.

You’re not the only one with Safari 5 trouble; I’ve read numerous complaints like yours and have experienced similar problems. My understanding is that the root cause is Safari’s new one-process-per-tab model, but that seems odd, since Chrome does the same thing without issue.

I’ve been using the WebKit nightly builds, and it seems better but not perfect. Chrome is perfectly good enough that I may very well switch to it entirely.

I’ve never used Safari, but I’ve had no problems with Chrome since I switched after IE8 had me pissed off enough that I decided to stop being lazy (though IE9 seems to have fixed most of that, I don’t see a point in switching back). Not only is my browsing stable, but it’s a lot faster too. Certainly those reloads are sufficient reason to switch sooner rather than later, especially with the risk of data loss or real cost.

In addition to those problems I seem to have lost the ability to print PDF’s when I upgraded from Safari 4 to 5. Everything acts like it was sent to the printer, but no print job shows up in the que.

I wasn’t particularly fond of Firefox or Chrome. I found Opera to be more similar to Safari than either of those, and have been happy with the switch.

I thought this was about something called a Fuck Safari.
