Fuck the NRA

The paranoia and fear wafting from the GOA website is intense. I hope the FBI is keeping tabs on those men.

I take it you still believe that events like this are a perfectly acceptable cost for minimal gun control.

The GOP won this fight after Sandy Hook when they collectively decided that murdering schoolchildren was more acceptable to them than restricting gun ownership. If that wasn’t enough to flip them, ten dead people at a college are meaningless.

Congratulations, Republicans, you won this one. We get the right to marry whichever gender we love, you get the right to make it easy as possible to murder people.

No doubt, but you shouldn’t go around admitting that in public.

Yes they see the world entirely one dimensionally. The actual merits of any legislation are irrelevant, all that is important is whether it leads to more guns or less guns. If legislation was put forth that required all people over the age of 2 to carry a gun with at all times, with summary execution (by firing squad of course) for those found with out a gun, they would support it.

Well said … just simple gun registration would be a good start to keeping guns out of the hands of crazies, something similar to car registration. As far as I know, driving a car on public roads is the privilege, owning a car is something of a right.

Of course, registering cars hasn’t stop car violence, but I think it helps.

I had the misfortune of actually watching an episode of My Little Pony a couple months ago, ever since I’ve been driving out of my way to pass by the local Class A gun dealership … I got boils for my cutie mark …

Well, the NRA, probably not; but Gun Owners of America would.

Make sure to keep scrolling down the page and read each article.

I keep reading that most NRA members do support some measure of gun control. Why can’t they toss out their leadership and get someone who represents the rank and file’s real views?

Yeah, fuck the NRA. Every time anything happens they just whip their followers into a frothing frenzy and so we can never have a reasonable debate about who has access to guns. Unbelievably guns have less control over them than cars in this country and guns are 100% a lethal killing device; there is no other use for them. But all the NRA can see in their red vision is “gun grabbers” and they train all their little peons to listen the same way.

Part of the issue is that the NRA isn’t just a general membership organization. It is also the business lobby of the firearm industry. It gets a minority of its money from its individual members. So something that the membership likes but that hurts the industry presents a dilemma for them, with the industry often winning out.

Yeah, the NRA really is just a lobbying agency for the arms industry. It’s membership (who, let’s face it, aren’t that bright) pretty much vote how the gun industry tell them to.

Cite? Please be clear when you answer whether you mean the NRA or the NRA-ILA. They are not the same thing and membership dues to the NRA do not fund the NRA-ILA.

Note: I do not have a particularly high opinion of the organizations in question. However, most of the criticism I see levelled at them here seems to consist of little more than impotent bitching over them being a better lobbying organization than their opponents.

A distinction without a difference; the NRA-ILA is the NRA’s lobbying arm.

Cite? And if not membership dues, the NRA-ILA’s funding must come from somewhere else – if that somewhere else is the arms industry, that is itself the objectionable point. And the NRA and its dues-paying members are responsible for that.

Most people refer to these organizations collectively. Most advocacy organizations are actually a bunch of state 501(c)(3)s and 501(c)(4)s and then separate national organizations, also with different corporate identities for different purposes. The NRA is similarly-structured. For lay purposes, we call them collectively the NRA.

I don’t know how each entity is funded within the NRA, though obviously money is fungible and the NRA wants funding for all the entities, so I don’t think it much matters to the question of the need for them to be responsive to both the interests of their membership and the interests of the industry. For a general cite about the proportions of their funding, see Wikipedia and the many “fact-checks” on the issue.

What about the Provisional NRA?

Alas, very American, from before we were a country at all, and British Loyalists had their homes and businesses vandalized. The long list of atrocities committed by the KKK are as American as they are un-American. That bozo in Nevada who gets to steal resources from the government because he has friends with guns: the heart of America.

(America has several thousand different hearts. Rush Limbaugh and Gloria Allred are both American and un-American!)

What about the RNA (the Rifle Nation Association)?

Fucking splitters.
