I know this is a derailment, but it’s my thread, so screw it. Did your family live in the Italian neighborhood? My wife’s family was Polish, and I know that people pretty much stuck together by ethnicity back then. Her family goes back in Buffalo to great-grandparents, also, and her father was a union organizer for the steelworkers.
I missed the 8 am eclipse here in ca but we turned on the news about 930 av news wasn’t showing anything live …so I hit fox news by accident and the coverage pissed me off they had a crew at one of the gatherings and the guy live was having fun … the anchor might as well just said “damn hippies get off the lawn” and being a smartass in general so I went to cnn and they were great and informative …

For everybody who hasn’t seen a total solar eclipse … GO … the OP is just being a sour puss and doesn’t know what he’s talking about … it’s worth the time and trouble and crowds to see the event … there’s nothing more beautiful in the natural world, the ultimate expression of just how lucky humans are just to exist …
I watched with about thirty other people, only I had seen one before … all but a couple people were totally and overwhelmingly amazed … what a show !!! … just GO …
I just wish I’d heard about the CD idea to make my own, so I could have looked for a few seconds. Instead, I just saw the darkness, which was pretty cool–darker than clouds even here.

Of course I read your OP … and I still think you’re totally nuts … if anything the eclipse didn’t get enough news coverage … the Pope is visiting someone all the time, volcanoes are popping off every month or two … a total eclipse of the sun is way above and beyond those other two mundane events …
