There have been TWO exhaustive special Senate committees who have analyzed Canada’s defence infrastructure and both times they have come back with the verdict that Canada’s military is in serious crises and needs immediate funding and a complete overhaul of its infrastructure. Both reports have been summarily ignored. Chretien believes its the US’s job to defend North America.
When you have NINE YEARS of “oh yes, we want to improve the military” yet each year funding drops and CF-18’s shoot themselves from the sky and SAR helicopters fall apart and we send infantry to a desert theatre dressed in arboreal camoflage there is a big fucking problem.
And as a member of goverment you don’t call your allies’ leader a moron. You represent your fucking country. America wasn’t too pleased when a German official likened Bush to Hitler, nor were the Germans.

Canada’s military certainly may need an overhaul, but it is up to Canada to do it. As I have said, America wouldn’t take kindly to any other country telling them how to run its military, so why should Canada be any different?

I believe we have a right to say “stop telling us what to spend our money on.” Like a family we can bitch and complain about our leadership and what it is doing, however we should be pissed when outsiders do it.

Moreover, he did nothing of significance to shut down the terrorist training camps in Afghanistan. That is a mistake that we will pay for (in blood) for years. Bin Laden often used Clinton’s flaccid (insert joke here) responses to terror, and the Somalia ambush, as proof that the U.S. was weak and unable to fight him. OBL said so on videotape.

You missed the fucking point entirely. It has nothing to do with “doing what the US wants”. The fact of the matter is the US right. The Military is in shambles and the Liberal party and its voters are to blame. And if you don’t think Liberal voters are sheep then you either a) don’t live in Ontario b) voted Liberal.
And so what if the Defense Minister said he wants to increase spending? Its his FUCKING JOB to say that. Still isn’t going to happen.
True - as a % of GDP we look pretty bad. However, you do realize that $12 Billion ranks Canada 6th? Do we need more money in the military? Most likely yes. This becomes a complex issue in terms of how much we want to cozy up to the U.S. for protection/cultural integration, how much we want our sovereignty, and how much “overhead” Canada carries (i.e. healthcare).
It should also be noted that Canada has always answered the bell. Could we defend ourselves if the U.S. started sending troops across the border? Not for 20 minutes, but that’s not likely to happen now, is it?

I am all for increasing military spending, IMO, the Liberal party has historically been responsible for the dismantling of our military. Canada has several socio-geographical-economic issues that make high military spending difficult to handle in peaceful times. However, these and any other problems that we canucks face, and share, provide very little reason to want the U.S. to exercise Manifest Destiny.
If you really mean that, and it wasn’t just a shot at the Liberals, you can go fuck yourself with a “Made in America” brick sideways.
