Fuck You, Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman

Back to the topic: holy schmoly, indeed, what a communications-advisor fail!! Poor Anderson… looked like *he *could not believe he was in this segment. “I want businesses to reopen, and what safetyt measures are taken is up to them, not to me”… explain to me again, exactly what is the mayor’s job?

Hearing about their background – I was under the impression that Vegas had years ago gone *corporate *corrupt instead of Mob corrupt. But then again I have the suspicion the old-school Mob would have established damn effective social distancing schemes and made sure the stores remained stocked with TP or else they’d put someone’s brain to sleep… Be that as it may, whoever bankrolls the Goodmans’campaigns has got to begin thinking of finding some other, more presentable stooge.

As to how Mayor Crazypants does not have the authority to reopen the casino industry even inside her own city limits… well that’s likely her schtick, Talk Is Cheap and she can rant and rave about it knowing that she’s not going to be the one to make the real decision and can then say it’s someone else’s fault however things turn out.

How about stupid fucking sociopath? According to the Jimmy Kimmel monologue I just watched

that fucking sociopath won the election with 80% of the vote. Which leads me to the following questions:
Las Vegas, is that true?

Las Vegas, what the fuck?

Get a fucking life, ya stupid prick.

I am not stupid.

No, you’re right, it did go corporate. Mayor of Las Vegas is a bit of a weird position because large areas of the city are actually… not the city… and just unincorporated land. Like… you get a Las Vegas postal address, and you’d be taken care of by Las Vegas police and fire, but you don’t get to vote in city elections (including mayor). I had a Las Vegas postal address, but I don’t think I could vote for mayor. The strip is not in the city of Las Vegas - the unincorporated town of Paradise was created to give them special legal/tax status. The county government seems to play a bigger role than it does in most places. The whole thing doesn’t make sense to me.

Anyway, I guess her husband was mayor for decades and does have legacy mob ties, and he’s probably running the show through her, and the like quarter of Las Vegas citizens that could vote for mayor elected her, but I’m not sure her position is very powerful. Definitely in matters of the quarantine - that’s all up to the governor. She’s apparently just some kook that has name recognition from long ago, when Vegas was a different town.

You know, I don’t have a good answer for that. I want to say that calling someone a dick or a bitch - both gendered insults about someone’s unpleasantness - is not the same as dropping an n-bomb on someone, because you’re not really describing a person’s personality or actions by dropping the n-bomb, you’re just dropping some hate in the hopes of hurting them (or showing hatred for a group to your peers). On the other hand, saying someone is a dick/bitch is a useful description of their personality or behavior that isn’t just expressing hatred at some innate property they have.

I assume that we all here think that calling a man a dick is not misandrist, even though 99% of the time using the word dick would only refer to a man. It seems logical to me that if, for the same behavior, we call a man a dick and a woman a bitch, that’s almost like using waiter/waitress - just gendered terms of conveying the same meaning. If that’s not true, then why is it okay to refer to men as dicks? Why isn’t that a misandrist insult?

In fact, that’s very much the point.

Goodman does mention in the interview that she is talking about “City casinos,” e.g. the old Las Vegas, not the Strip.

It became clear to me that she wants to open Las Vegas early **to fuck over the casinos on the Strip. ** Those casino owners want her to open 'er up so that people flock there while the Strip is still closed. That way they get a windfall and screw the competition in the unincorporated county.

If a few servers and dealers die, oh well.

Okay. [Applause] for that!

Okay, we have a new Australian Pit thread containing “cunt” in the title. Australians and Brits use “cunt” as an all-encompassing slur for women AND men, much like we normal Americans use “dick” for assholish men and women. How do we deal with that?

I don’t think it’s unmisandrist as far as these things go, as it equates assholish behavior with the possession of a penis, but I don’t find it as insulting as being called a non-human.

But I’m not the word police and that’s just my lightly-held opinion. I’m not going to pass judgement on people who use dick at all, and bitch only when used habitually.

I think this is where we disagree. A man calling a woman a bitch or a cunt is expressing hatred, whether they mean to or not. That’s my understanding from talking to women who have discussed it with me - that extreme sexism bordering on hate is built into those terms, based on the way they have had those epithets thrown at them over their lives.

Yes, you have. And then you were repeatedly pelted with the actual facts on the situation, and you continued to push it. Despite the numbers showing exactly why the current lockdown is needed, and even the data showing it’s working, you continue to push an ignorant opinion. You, an astrophysisist, thinks he knows more than the actual epidemiologists.

You actually tried to argue that going to beaches was fine, and up to the individual to consider their risk, ignoring that they’d get infected and bring it back home, killing people. You apparently didn’t know about the small gatherings rule or the 6 foot rule. You actually tried to argue that shelter in place was bad because people with essential jobs wouldn’t be able to do their job–when every single such order makes exceptions.

You ignore that the decisions here are data driven by actual experts. You commenting that you know better is like when non-biologist scientists sign creationist papers. It does not matter.

The thing is, while you may not be as bad as the protesters or political office holders like this one, you are still in the same general area of putting your own knowledge over those who know the subject. That you are less bad than them is little comfort to me, because I expect more out of you.

That you keep pushing on, and haven’t just either apologized for bad info or even just shut up about it, makes me very disappointed. Yet you’re getting away with it. So I will continue even if I’m the lone voice who continues to call you out every time you bring this up.

The only reason I’m being less mean right now is in case you’ve been ignoring my posts due to my (justified) fury.

Because “bitch” and “dick” are not synonyms. A dick is just an asshole. The word may represent a part of the male anatomy, but it is not used to ever imply that a woman acts like a man.

The same is not true of “bitch.” If you call a man a bitch, you are saying that he has stereotypical negative female attributes–being cranky, overly emotional, subservient, etc. “Quit being such a bitch, Johnny” doesn’t mean the same thing as “Quit being such a dick, Johnny.” And you would never say that “George is just Jamie’s dick.”

This is generally the case–an insult that attacks an oppressed group or minority is more likely to have bigoted implications and be more insulting than one used for the dominant group. It’s why “cracker” and the n-word, which seem like they should mean the same thing, are so completely different–cracker is just a funny word for white people that is used to seem old-timey, and the other is, well, the n-word.

In short, due to how systemic bigotry works, terms like “dick” are not generally used in a bigoted fashion, while “bitch” is, more often than not.

Dick and bitch are not synonyms. They carry different meanings. And “bitch” carries the meaning of “has negative traits that women have.”

Edit: I left out cunt because I assumed that this was a given. If cunt is on the table, then its use, at least in the US, is even more gendered. It’s predominantly only used towards women, with nothing remotely as insulting to men. And when it is used for men, it is pretty much directly comparing them to women.

At least in the US. I understand the word’s history is different elsewhere. What matters is always how words are used, not their etymology. There’s literally a fallacy named after that.

I had no idea Chronos was a Cleveland astrophysicist.

Degree from Case Western Reserve? My dear old Uncle Willie, bless his soul, got his medical degree there when it was still the Case Institute of Technology. He was one of the top men setting up MASH units in Europe during the Big One, and was the boss surgeon at a top Cleveland hospital from the late forties up to the late eighties.

I approve of your careful use of the mot juste.

I would expect that, when the audience is largely American, they would take into account how an American would interpret that. I also expect that anyone who isn’t a bigot wants to avoid being thought of as one, and would thus avoid it, and apologize if they slip up.

On the other hand, an American knowing they were Australian would be more inclined to give it a pass. It’s not a one-way street. And if they went to a largely Australian audience, they wouldn’t freak out about the word.

All of this is assuming, BTW, that men and women in Australia agree it’s not offensive or gendered in Australia. I assume that’s the case, but I would love to see an Australian woman confirm.

I suggest “dialect tags”. For example:

I’ve got a theory, that started when I saw an ad for that massively tacky Noah’s Ark attraction in Kentucky. It’s a shared fantasy world, like an MMORPG. They prefer a world where Sauron is called Satan, and his liberal inhuman followers undermine conservative values. In the Beginning there was light 6000 years ago. All our animals came out of an Ark. False is true. Stupidity is power. The comms person didn’t stop the interview because the comms person believes in the same fantasy world and aspires to work for FOX News some day.

You’ll have to ask the asshole (with apologies to actual anuses) madsircool for the ruling on that. He seems perfectly fine with calling men (and Hillary) bitches.

The Pit may not be a good place to be if you cannot handle Pit language. No apologies offered, certainly not to the stupid cunt who is the subject of this thread.
