Probably not going to be a popular opinion but… What did people think was going to happen? We created a system where a business gets proprietary ownership of a resource people’s lives depend on, and then told them to operate as a for-profit enterprise. If I was legally the only person allowed to sell water, I could charge whatever I wanted. Now someone actually went and did it, and people are angry about it?? The spice must flow, as they say.
The US health care system is corrupt as shit, and every election 50% of the country votes for a party dedicated to maintaining the status quo, so this is just the obvious end result of a century of idiocy. We still have people campaigning on the idea that health care reform Is a socialist assault on our liberty, and people buy it, and assholes like Shkreli take our money and laugh all the way to the bank… And then the morons STILL vote against reform in the health care system.

At the risk of my reputation on this Board (such as it is), I would like to say a few words in his defence.
I believe he is correct in asserting that Daraprim was underpriced. I don’t remember the exact figures but, the cost of that drug per life saved, even after the huge price hike, was still much less than the cost for many other drugs, e.g. the newly available hepatitis-C therapy, and virtually all the designer monoclonal antibodies reaching the market every day (you know, the ones that cost 100K annually, or more).
In other words, the drug is, relatively speaking, still a bargain!
So, all he was doing rectifying a historic pricing error. Yes, it means that some people will no longer be able to afford it, but he claims that no one will ever be denied the drug because of lack of funds. And, yes, it means that the total cost for all prescription drugs dispensed in the US will increase - to the tune of something in the ballpark of 0.1 percent. Hardly the end of the world.
I think people should admit the fact that he is simply a very identifiable target - a surrogate - for the ‘evil’ BIG PHARMA. Yes, he is own worst enemy but it is disingenuous to single him out when so many other pharmaceutical firms are charging way more than he is for their product (per life saved).
ETA: I think he also happens to have a forme fruste of Tourette’s Syndrome and that surely doesn’t help him come across well
