Fuck you Mr Mechanic

Do Evolutions have some type of external oil reservoir? I’ve never heard of an oil tank on a car. In fact, the only vehicle I’ve seen with one is my dirt bike, with a 2-stroke engine and oil injection.

I’m glad to see no crap was taken from the guy.

There are some good ones. I had my local mechanic try to correct a small oil leak on a car, he kept it for several days and spent a lot of time on it. When he finally fixed it, he called me in to pick it up. It was just before he left, he said to just take it and we’d catch up to it later. For the next two months I’d come in to buy some gas, and walk in and ask him what I owed him. Finally, he said to forget about it.

The dealer told my daughter that her brakes were in bad shape to the tune of $600. She just went out and bought some pads and tried to get friends to replace them. Nobody had time, so she went to a shop to have them do it. They got the car on the llft, looked at the brakes, and said they couldn’t take her money because the brakes were fine.

Why do you need a road worthy and safety check? Just wondrin’

Prolly has to do with their version of the DMV and getting the thing through emissions and safety.

Glad my concerns were for naught. Hope they continue to treat you well after this episode.

Atheist Princess is in “Briz-Vegas” and Silentgoldfish is in Brisbane, which is the official name of the same city, so they both use the services of Queensland Transport when registering their cars.

Way to go, Atheist Princess! I don’t own a car yet, but I dread trying to find a reliable mechanic when I do.

Are you in the US?

If so, the Car Talk guys have a database of mechanics that includes customer ratings and reviews.

Not only am I in the US, I’m just outside of Cambridge. One of these days, I’m gonna figure out where the heck “Car Talk Plaza” is and track those guys down; Mapquest is curiously silent on the subject.
At the moment, however, a car is still a long way off. If I even want to put up with owning a car in Boston. But that’s another Pit thread.

The whole Petro-Canada being a part of the National Energy Program, the legislation that required a tax on sales of all gas being used to subsidize Petro-Canada, the possible (and likely) pork-barrelling involved in Liberal sponsorship of the Petro-Canada execs, the making of a bunch of gas money and funneling it into Ottawa, lining some Liberal party supporters’ pockets along the way, and making a difficult time in Calgary even more difficult are all parts of it. It’s a dirty company, doing business in a dirty way, and all sanctioned (heck, created) by Ottawa.
{hijack OFF}

So, you won’t support them economically by buying gas/petrol from them, but you will pay them to work on your car? I don’t see the consistency there.

Ah. Well, that certainly explains the gas. However, I’m with FBG - the car service seems like a bit of a logical disconnect. No worries tho.

But the Big Dig is almost over!

Per the thread: My dad had a lovely encounter with a mechanic just recently. My dad, albiet gullible, knows what he is talking about when it comes to cars. Well, he got basically a lemon for his work truck, and it has had many problems. The guy he took it to, though, had several more. Before my dad found out, he would do things like fake reciepts, say he replaced something he really didn’t, deliberatly change or break something so “it needed replaced”, and even have his brother to steal his tools as an insurance scam. Turns out there were drugs involved, too.

At first glance, I might suspect that her willingness to make use of non-gasoline-sales-related services is because those transactions do not carry a surcharge that funds the corruption she is decrying.

I’ll let featherlou be the one to clarify, though.

Right - instead of a surcharge, her funds are going directly to the corporation (anc corruption) that she’s decrying. However, it’s possible (I don’t know) that PetroCanada repair shops are independantly owned franchises, in which case the benefit of supporting small business could outway the negitive of indirectly supporting big business.

I dunno. Anyhow - I have no opinion - I don’t have a car - but I was curious.

I like kaylasdad’s answer better than my own - I take my car to the PetroCanada Certigard repair guys because I really need good mechanics, and I put my driving before my integrity. Hmm, now that you mention it, I think Shell and the like have service stations, too - I think I’ll switch for the good of my integrity.

I’m afraid it’s universal. I took my car in to the gas station to get the air topped off in the tires, and the yutz working there said I needed brake work and it would only be X dollars. He showed me where the brake drum was ‘burned’. I said thanks, and left, and called Meineke, with whom we have a lifetime warranty on brakes. I made an appointment and went in. A half hour later Meineke called me to say, come get your car, the brakes are fine, they don’t need replacement.

Yay for Meineke. Boo to the guy at the gas station.

Well…

About a month ago I was defected for my car being too low and an ‘incorrect’ air filter. I have just won in court and figure that to avoid all future defect notices and fines, it would be far more simple to carry a valid and recent safety certificate in my car so that when a cocky little ass of a cop decides that he’s bored an wants to defect me, I can throw it in his face and go home feeling great
