New Jersey doesn’t get that cold. It’s hardly ever below 0º F.
The sun sets earlier in the winter (when you’re probably nestling in with a good book to escape the cool breezes, outdoors), so that it can stay up longer during the summer when you might want to actually be out running around.
As to why you choose to live in an area that you are unable to appreciate, I have no answer beyond “inertia.”

Because the apparent path of the fucking sun goes below the equator. Even during the summer, everyfucking one of the sun’s rays hits New Jersey at about a fifteen degree angle or more, but during the winter, the bastards hit at up to a sixty-five degree angle. This means that you get less than half the fucking light, and consequently get less than half the fucking heat. Be thankful for the piece of shit Gulf Stream, or it might even be colder.

It could be worse. The Air Force stuck a buddy of mine from Hawaii in Minot, North Dakota. In winter. This is a guy who used to think 60 degrees Farenheit (15 Celsius) was cold.
