I’m diabetic too, so it was especially disturbing to me when an ex-PETA member who posts on this very Board told me (paraphrasing) that “well, maybe you should have died and made the genome stronger. What gives you the right to live any more than a pig? You’re bringing the species down, and fighting natural selection.”
As well as the campaigns discussed by KingRat and ElwoodCuse, they also had one extolling the virtues of a vegetarian diet which seemed to buy into the media obsession with thin women. These ads talked about obesity in America, and discussed the amount of fat and cholesterol added to the typical American diet by meat. Now, i’m all for weaning people off some of the extraordinarily high levels of fat and other crap in their diets, and i’m a vegetarian myself, but these ads held up a much too rigid standard of thinness, and also seemed to be aimed more at women than at men.
I can’t find an example online right now, but i remember the feminist magazine Bitch discussing the issue about a year back. If i find a cite, i’ll post it.
I am a vegetarian, and frankly, PETA disgusts me. They do more damage to their cause with their ridiculous protests than they do good.
Are conditions in slaughterhouses horrible? YES!
Is it comparable to the Holocaust? NO!
PETA has resoorted to these utterely moronic tactics precisely because they ARE irrelevant. They don’t represent the majority of vegetarians any more that the Chrisitian Coalition represents the majority of Christians.
My response to that would have been (don’t know if it applies to you) “I use Humulin and don’t cause the death of any pigs. Feel free to choke on a wad of my test strips though.”
Elwood, speaking from memory, the NRA supports background checks and would certainly be for laws that deny felons and the incompetent access to firearms.
This has been done, anyway. – Read my first post in that thread for a challenge to anyone who says “All publicity is good publicity.”
Amen. And I even wrote them a letter saying exactly that. The response? (Summed up, of course!) “The end justifies the means.” That was it for me, I don’t promote PETA in any way anymore.

I support the concept that animals need to have rights too. I even attempt to make especially sure to support cosmetic companies that I know don’t test their products on animals. However, PETA has gone way overboard.
A former boyfriend (back in the 80s) was where I heard that for the first time, I thought it was an amusing slap to the face to the ridiculous ideas of PETA.
I’ve heard interviews on the radio, and seen newspaper articles, with some of those people, and their “animals have things to do” type sentiment regarding how wrong it is to have pets (namely horses and sleddogs) is just SO ridiculous.
too many rich kids/rich housewives with too much time on their hands, and no need to face “real life” because mommy and daddy/hubby pave their way, every step of the way.
