Sorry if this goes a bit off topic, but I just would like to observe that but Michael Moore and PETA serve as examples of left wing kooks, proving they can be just as bad if not worse than the right wing kooks.
Every PETA “stunt” sickens me more than the last. They aren’t far away from the tactics of the A.L.F. (Animal liberation Front), or ELF, known eco terrorists, read organized arson.
Except that the NRA has never supported that. They’ve been one of the most vocal supporters of the NICS system, and have always been opposed to allowing criminals to own firearms.
Now PETA on the other hand is every bit as loony as all its publicity students indicate.
There’s a good article about PETA and it’s founder in this weeks New Yorker. (It’s the one with the painting/drawing of the soldier looking through binoculars on the cover.)
I took an ethics class in CEGEP where we had to debate animla rights - pro pr con. I ended up on the con side, and really had to think about how to validly argue against animal rights, especially since I love animals and think that they should be treated humanely, etc.
My prof suggested something to me which basically defined how I feel today about the issue. He said that “theres a difference between animal rights and animal welfare. You can be against unnecessary animal testing, or against certain slaughterhouse policies, or against animal abuse without resorting to giving them RIGHTS - which could put them on a level with humans, meaning everything from right to life to right to VOTE”.
Now to a certain extent, he was obviously exaggerating his examples at the end there, but its kinda true. If you put animals on par with a human, then EVERYTHING should be equal. I don’t believe thats necessary. I eat meat, but I don’t buy make-up, let alone makeup tested on animals. I support medical research on animals, because its much safer than testing it on humans without knowing if it’ll kill a human right away, and I refuse to believe (like is hinted at by PETA) that we’d be better off without medicine. I believe in animal WELFARE. I believe in providing animals with an appropriate living space (my apartment for a domesticated cat, the jungle for a monkey), and not forcing pain or starvation onto an animal. I believe in humane slaughter practises, which result in a minimal amount of pain, but I also believe that animals like mink shouldn’t be raised for the sole purpose or skinning them for fur coats.
I’m not going to list everything, because I don’t think I could and there are fine lines already in what I’ve typed, and this isn’t really the point of the thread. I just think that PETA, and other “animal rights” activists take things way too far. If they want to be on par with the animals, then give up their cars/homes/websites/jobs/clothes and go hunt and live in the woods au natural. Just don’t bother me with your crap.
Well, there are a couple things you can compare to the holocaust without causing offense - the Stalinist Purges, the Armenian killings, the deaths caused by Mao or Pol Pot, but PETA has just made themselves look like idiots with this stunt.
My mom has heard about a case or two where people tried to take guide dogs away from their owners to liberate them from “slavery.”
Have these people ever KNOWN a guide dog? They LOVE their jobs!
Asshats. I, too, am all for treating animals humanely. But I do not put a rat above a human, like some of the nuts do. Medical research on animals should be carried out as humanely as possible. I volunteer with a local animal rescue group, which gets animals out of what is apparently a truly horrid pound. It’s great to see them going home with people who will love and care for them properly. (These are DOMESTICATED animals. Without us, they’re screwed. Pet wolves are highly questionable at best, but a pet Golden Retriever is heaven.) When I buy food for myself, I don’t buy much meat. I’ve thought about trying being a vegetarian, but for purely practical reasons haven’t done it.
I hate the way extremists seem to always take over and make what was a reasonable idea seem crazy because THEY’RE crazy.
People are always bitching about PETA because of their ad campaigns, which means they must be pretty effective. All they want to do is get your attention, and they’ve done that, time and time again.
Why get worked up over it? Ignore them and maybe they’ll go away.
As stated before many times on this board, just because someone is talking about something does not equate effectiveness.
If PETA continually looks like a bunch of idiotic, thoughtless boobs overstating the importance of animals while also demeaning the suffering of human carnage, they have been far from effective. All of the press they are receiving only helps to further marginalize their group and their views.
Never bothered to slam PETA before, but this is further proof (as if any was needed) that the animal rights movement has been hijacked by flaming ninnies.
I hereby offer to give PETA $1.43 if they change their name to CARP (Clueless Animal Rights Pissants).
Actually, Jackmannii, i think that your link was pretty funny, and one of PETA’s less controversial or offensive publicity stunts.
I think the funniest thing in that story is the town’s claim “to be the birthplace of the American culinary staple.” The precise origins of the hamburger are still debated; [url=“http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/HamburgerHistory.htm”]this site gives four or five possibilities, and i’ve heard of plenty of other contenders too.
