The law says you have to make “reasonable accommodations.” FWIW, Baptists and Mormons to my knowledge are not prohibited from serving alcohol. Mormons are definitely prohibited from consuming it–a Mormon would have to chime in with more details. Baptists aren’t even generally prohibited from consumption of alcohol, albeit there is a strong overlap of “Protestant teetotalers” and “Baptists.” But half my family was Baptist growing up (other half Catholic), there is no unified Baptist doctrine against alcohol consumption, and certainly not against serving it. Some Baptists are just part of morality movements against alcohol that aren’t strictly related to their religious beliefs. There is a religious prohibition on “drunkenness” depending on how you interpret parts of the bible, but that’s not the same as a prohibition on alcohol.

So to get back to your question, serving alcohol is arguably a small part of the flight attendant’s job, and the accommodation they had worked out allowed her to do her duties otherwise. Often a reasonable accommodation will mean you take on more work in one area while not performing work in an area that is against your religious beliefs.

Not all jobs can make accommodations, but my opinion is the flight attendant could be reasonably accommodated. Examples of people who can’t be accommodated would be say, a taxi driver who is Muslim and refuses to transport a seeing eye dog. Taxi drivers are regulated transit people who cannot disregard the ADA, and there can be no accommodation for a driver who won’t pick up a service animal. Albeit many have fought on this issue up in Minneapolis (which has a large population of Muslim immigrant drivers.)

Hell, we’ve had drivers fight us on it in Anaheim.

I almost think that the RR really are hell bent on converting a nation. What they don’t understand is that you can’t cherry pick the constitution like they do with the bible.

What totally worries me is the fact that there is all this controversy over someone who refuses to do her job as told and is praised for it.

They may be giving her rope to hang herself. She’s supposedly going to go back to work later this week. She’s said, through her lawyer, that the marriage licenses issued to same sex couples in her absence are not valid, will she try to do something about that? Also, she may try to interfere with further licences being issued. She could go back to jail for that.

It occurs to me that after the weddings, the records of the marriages are going to have to be recorded and archived. I wonder if she intends to try interfering with that.

Baptists are a strongly “congregational” church, meaning each individual church is extremely independent. The big conventions like the SBC, ABC and a few others all have divergent positions on alcohol. The biggest “conservative, evangelical” Baptist convention, the SBC is firmly anti-alcohol. However even their position has nuance, SBC holds that the bible does not say that alcohol is forbidden or that it’s a sin to consume alcohol. But the bible lists many “dangers” of consuming alcohol. For this reason it has adopted the position that there is a “traditional avoidance of alcohol, that prevents loose morality, and that the modern church should follow this tradition.” The official position further states the local congregations should have sermons and teachings that emphasize abstinence from alcohol.

However, like Baptist churches in general, the SBC member churches are extremely independent of the SBC. However my personal experience with SBC churches is most are strongly teetotaler in their teachings and behavior, and very few would be out of line with SBC official position on alcohol.

FWIW my family that are Baptists are from the ABC, which is more of a “mainline” (meaning not evangelical/fundamentalist) Baptist convention. It doesn’t stake out much of a position on alcohol use, but does have a lot of positions on helping combat alcoholism. I never knew any ABC Baptists who were brash teetotalers. There may have been some teetotalers but it wasn’t expected, nor would the old church ladies be talking among themselves if they saw you walking out of the gas station with a six pack.

However even in the evangelical Baptist groups I’m aware of, none doctrinally (at least the national organizations) prohibit consumption of or “touching of” alcohol. Since it’s all very congregational, I imagine some evangelical Baptist churches are even far more conservative than the SBC and actively teach that it’s sin to drink, or even if they don’t go that far, stress that their members not drink ever.

This morning I’m watching Fox news. They had Bill Donohue from the catholic advantage on and he was arguing that the ACLU supports groups of prisoners gathering in groups to pray, but they don’t support Kim Davis refusing to allow gay people to marry. And he can’t understand this contradiction. I can’t understand his argument.

Anybody want to give it a shot? I mean, are prisoners somehow not doing doing their job when they gather to pray? I don’t get it.

Plus I’d think a catholic fella would be ok with prayer.
