Same with my town. Once my car broke down–I had to take the bus home to get the proper tools to repair it. What is normally a 15 minute drive took an hour and a half by bus. I could have walked home faster!

Well, for myself, kitty litter works well for grip (grit). To be honest, I live in a basement apartment, and just stomp through the snow to get out. The upstairs people shovel the front steps (where I get my mail in the front hall). There are bags of sand and salt in the hall ($2 - $4 each as mentioned, and readily available), and the city plows the sidewalk, which it owns. Part of the road infrastructure. If they need to do snowbank removal again this year, I’ll try to take a picture of one of the “monster sized” snowblowers. They’re quite awesome.

The best / most ironic part of snow removal is that if one is parked on a street when operations are taking place, they ticket you, then tow your car - not to an impound lot, but to a random street in the neighborhood that’s been cleared already. You now get to find your car :smack:

At least here when they do this they make a note of it, and you can call the police to find out where it was moved to. (So the city website claims, anyway - I’ve never needed to do it.)

That’s interesting. Yes, according to the city one can call the police to find out where the car is. Did not know that.

What one can’t do, from actually watching it happen on Superbowl eve, is argue with a tow truck driver to get your car off the hitch or flatbed.

This provided much amusement during the third quarter, when people ran out of the hospital I was watching it at and tried to bargain / argue for the safety of their cars. Heh, heh.

Just watching the local news here, and they said that the city has received 35 slip and fall calls in ONE WEEK. Not all of them were serious injuries, but some of them were. Multiply that by the five months that we have snow on the ground here, and you have approximately 700 slip and falls per winter from assholes who just don’t shovel.

I’m sorry if I inconvinienced any walkers, but like I said, there were at least 2 other houses on my same block that had to be avoided, so it looks like any walkers adapted, like i figured they would.

The ability of salt and other melters to break up stubborn ice is just unbelievable. The difference between hacking at it with and without is huge.
