I’m sorry, but… fear of getting caught? What happens if you try to walk into a theater when you don’t have a ticket? I’ve never tried it myself, but I’m pretty sure the worst thing that happens is they don’t let you enter the theater. Which doesn’t really strike me as the sort of fate that strikes terror into the hearts of would be criminals.

As compared to what?
(1) You don’t need to go to the movies, they are an entertainment and a luxury.
(2) You can afford to pay to go, you just choose not to.
IOW, you are stealing something you don’t need and could afford to buy. You’ve made yourself a thief and for what? Ten dollars? No need to ask the price of your personal integrity and honesty: It’s ten bucks. What makes it a “big deal” is what it says about you, not the value of the thing you are stealing.
I think this is a situation where a piss poor marketing plan by the studio coupled with some possibly unreasonable assumptions led to this catastrophe. While I don’t think Equipose should escape any kind of self-blame for this, I certainly can see how the studio could have created a poorly designed, poorly communicated showing of the trailer that would leave folks angry.

The analogy was not even in fact mine to begin with, but simply posited as a possible scenario which would be similar and perhaps as disappointing to some as the OP’s case was to her. I never tried to pass the concert scenario off as something I thought actually occured, and by happy circumstance it appears that it is!
I have gone into movies that I haven’t paid for. Mostly when the movie I want to see is sort of full, and we decide to catch the next one. We go in another theater till the movie we want starts.
I never felt really bad about it, but I think it is the type of thing one isn’t proud of. I think it is not the type of thing I would have wanted to admit to my dad.

We’ve got an annoyed poster who’s managed to parlay this particular event into a justification to cheat a movie company from some amount of revenue. Other posters pointing out the theft related nature of their chosen set of actions, others chiming in to admit they, too either have done something similar or don’t have a problem w/it. Meh. I’ll grant that the amusement factor of this thread is probably less than I"d have anticipated (hey, wait a minute, that means some one owes me!!!), but even on a trainwreck scale this misses by several light years.

Just so it’s clear, I don’t agree with that crap either, so I hope no one lumps me and lobstermobster together too. I pay thousands of dollars every year to see movies, very gladly. Outside the realm of free entertainment (movies-in-the-park, free days at museums, etc.) it’s the cheapest out-of-house entertainment going. It sure beats the kind of money they want for theater productions. We make it cheaper by using public transportation so no parking, staying away from the concession area by bringing our own snacks (some theaters, like AMC, do allow this), using coupons, going to matinees, and finding as many sneak preview passes as we can (going to see a freebie of Juno tonight), and we STILL pay thousands of dollars every year. I don’t mind, if I have the money, because I want more movies to be made.

I’ve never shoplifted before. Honestly it never really occured to me. If I want something I buy it with money. I don’t even go to that many movies and obviously I pay sometimes. I’m not entitled to anything but if no one is going to stop me from just walking in I’m going to do it and not think twice about it. I still don’t see what the problem is. I watch most of the movies I see when my boyfriend downloads them. I’m sure thats the same thing in your eyes now that I think about it. Every single person I know downloads everything in torrents. I mean everyone. But my friends are all crooks and pedophiles.
