Why in the hell do we accept such slow progress in our society? I can’t believe we still act the way we do, this being the fourth year of the 21st century of the modern era!

For some reason, the larger the group of humans is, the stupider they get overall. At the smallest level, a single person or a family, they get along well. They don’t kill each other over territory, threaten with embargos, etc. Neighborhoods, look what we have degenerated to! Ongoing battles over lawn color and texture, suing other people out of thousands of dollars over the neighbor’s paint selection, the list goes on.

Society thinks on too small a scale. The Earth has been around for 4.5 billion years people, think about what the fuck you are doing here. Look at what we have ravaged in only the last 100 years of time. Most everyone has an ideal picture of society that includes peace, freedom from hunger, oppression, etc. If nearly everyone wants this, why in the hell can’t we make it happen! Such a significant majority of people should have a deciding impact on affairs! Why don’t we! The very people who do not want peace and freedom, but instead want to increase their authority, power, and security, are the ones who are making the Big Decisions!

Why do we have such terrible people running our governments?

America was founded on principles designed to secure the people’s sovereignty over their life, civil and human rights, and their pursuits of happiness.

Yet, we entrust individuals to govern (read: control¹) us who do NONE of these things. No wonder our country is so fucked up!

We need to revamp this society. The U.S. government is corrupt. Hold up people, we need to reboot this shit.

What shall we do? If America is the way it could/should be, the silent majority of us should be able to vote out every single one of these assholes out of office and replace them. Unfortunately, these two major parties, through their efforts over a hundred or more years, have managed to secure themselves in their offices. The only realistic options now for most Americans are the Republicans or the Democrats. Come on, this is pathetic. This is America? Where’re the parties that uphold the Constitution? Think people!

If there is some sort of realizable afterlife awaiting us all, I hope it isn’t with all 6 billion of you bastards, 'cause man you guys are DUMB!

Actually, the Demublicans and Republicrats do uphold the Constitution — just exactly in the manner they see fit. There is no America anymore in the sense of a romantic and rebellious free nation. You may as well get over it. Sorry. You’ll be lucky if your grandchildren do not live in pods and belong to The State.

Yeah, I made a couple mistakes. I am used to posting on other forums using this layout, and they all let me edit my posts. This one doesn’t, but I didn’t remember that until after I clicked Submit. Not that it matters, my mistakes don’t appreciably affect the points I was making. Now, if all you people are going to do is take lame potshots at something so trivial rather than peaceably discussing, you can go get bent.

Oh, and when I said ‘you guys are dumb’, I wasn’t referring to anyone specifically. I was talking about everyone. Do you not agree that society as a whole makes some pretty damn stupid decisions?

Well, hate to burst your bubble, but progress takes a helluva lot longer than four years, and the fact that it’s now the 21st century has little to nothing to do with that progress. I mean, in the USA, how many DECADES did it take for minorities to recieve the same legal protections as whites?

So, some people are petty and nitpick at everything that doesn’t meet their liking. There are six BILLION human beings in this world. Someone is bound not to like what you’re doing, if for no other reason than it makes them feel smug and superior.

Just a small nitpick. Not everyone has an ideal picture of society that includes peace, freedom from hunger, oppression, etc. Some governments only exist because of oppression. Some countries, due not only to the governments but also due to the people, cannot feed themselves. And peace…good God, where did you get the idea that the world WANTS peace?

You ask why not have the people decide if the baddies are the ones looking to take over their rights? Well, in the words of Stalin, “We do not let them [the people] have guns, why should we let them have ideas?” Many people in the world are raised to believe that the word of their ‘leaders’ is akin to the word of God. It is only here, in the more liberal thinking West, that the ability to question authority without (at the least) engaging in a social faux pas or (at the worst) being executed for it has come to pass. China, Korea, Cuba, a large portion of Africa, some smaller states in South America, and the majority of the Muslim world have moderately to severely repressive regiems. The people either A: don’t think too much about it because it will kill me or B: don’t think too much about it because its the way it is and I’m still getting enough to eat.

Well, some are elected (Hussein) and some force their way into power (Castro.) Think about how rare it is to have a coup in which the leader IS a man of the people. I’m thinking of General Muschareff of Pakistan. I mean, he just got a vote of confidence which makes him the legitimate leader of Pakistan. That, versus the dozens of tin-pot dictators around the world is just sad.

No arguement there, but everybody knows that.

Then VOTE for someone who does. Remember, the whole checks-and-balances thing you learned in senior year civics? In the end, the vote of the average person is the ultimate check over the government.

Um, yea. Go vote this coming november. If you don’t feel like waiting that long, start helping the nearest campaign of the most upstanding Boy Scout candidate you know of.

For the third time, vote. In 2000 I voted Nader. There ARE other options besides the Republicans and Democrats. In 1992, Perot had at one point a 20% poll constituancy. He blew it, yes, but he still had a shot. Why are you bitching? Why aren’t you out there helping your local Green, Unitarian, Reform, Communist, Nationalist Socialist or Independant candidate?

Did I not already address this? You are not thinking on a large enough scale. Humans have been around for ~160,000 years, and yet we are still piddling along in this measly existence? Why haven’t we shedded our primitive instincts and embraced reason and knowledge? Think of what we could have accomplished. We could have accelerated history by centuries or millenia. Instead, today we take two steps backward for every three forward.

Looking back on the replies so far, it seems like no one is grasping what I’m trying to put across. This medium through which we communicate is laughably primitive. Why hasn’t society devised a way to combine our brain power and knowledge into one central source? 'Twould be a lot more efficient than dividing the thing 6 billion ways, what with our primitive tendencies interfering all the time and whatnot.

The human race does not have an infinite amount of time in which to evolve itself. We should be making the most of what we have. Yet, we still sit here, on this chunk of rock hurtling through space, mindlessly babbling about inconsequential topics, killing each other for no particular reason, etc. Why haven’t we moved off of this planet in order to inhabit better places? Why haven’t we moved ourselves out of our little neighborhood and stepped out into the unknown in search of that which we don’t know? There is so much out there that we could be applying ourselves to, yet humans seem content to sit here and rot ourselves from the inside out. Baffling.
