I’m a dog owner/lover and agree, if the dog craps on grass, likely some will come off on the grass even if you pick it up, depending on particular consistency… anyway it’s IMO fair for people to get pissed at that when it’s their private property.
Where I live the dog owner v non-dog owner controversies are more subtle. Basically no lawns, urban area. Most parks have signs saying keep dogs off grass, opinions vary how much of a reprobate you are if your dog ever ends up crapping on grass (rarely in my case, but her training sometimes makes her step off the foot path onto the edge of the grass to do it, I try to prevent it). Is it really rational to assume public park grass is clean?
Then there’s the question of putting dog crap in a bag in somebody’s garbage can. My code is that if the can’s lid is off, and it’s been taken out onto the sidewalk or street by the garbage men or is within reach from public property, and it’s a plastic bag completely tied up, them’s the rules and go live in the suburbs if you don’t like it. I don’t get pissed when I find dog poo bags in my garbage cans put in under those conditions. I do if it’s not a plastic bag, not tied up, or they had to lift the lid or come into my (small stone floored) front yard. But some non-dog people think it should be a capital offense if you don’t take it to a public garbage can, which is what I do a large % of time, but I don’t think it an absolute must.
Lease laws, I have a big problem with people ignoring those. If some other dog off its leash comes after mine, she will f**k it up badly if they can’t be separated quickly, except for a small % of dogs with the ability and spirit to beat her in a fight, and I don’t want her hurt either. I don’t want anybody’s dog hurt. This has happened a few times, though really serious injury was avoided thankfully. Some people think since their dog is friendly to all creatures, the law doesn’t apply. But the law is also to protect dog friendly dogs from getting themselves hurt by dogs like mine (very people friendly, but demonic possession level dog intolerant, and extremely strong and quick). Nor did my dog deserve to languish in the shelter and die just because she can’t stand other dogs. It’s no problem if everyone obeys the leash law.
I’ve owned two dogs and generally would let them out in the yard a while before walk time. But the guy who mentions other creatures doing their business is on the money. Sure cat poop is smaller, but the cat people let their cats roam the neighborhood and aren’t around to clean it up…ever.
I don’t let my dogs shit on anyone else’s lawn even though I bring plastic bags with me. They go in the public park and I pick up after them. I cannot understand why people allow their dogs to shit just anywhere even if they pick up after them. Fucking wow.
I live in the suburbs. People walk their dogs and if its trash day, they toss the bag in my trash can by the curb so they don’t have to carry it home with them and toss it in THEIR trash can.
Nothing bigger than squirrel. And even if I have wild moose dropping huge dumps on my lawn, that STILL doesn’t give you license to let your dog poop on my lawn.
Why are you blaming the cats for the lousy behavior of their owners? As the OP points out it is the OWNERS who are assholes. Responsible cat owners keep their cats safely indoors.
OMG I could pit this all day. Our AC officer has to routinely come down to our neighborhood park to break up dog fights. She was telling us a few months ago that most of the owners who belong to this loosely-organized “offleash dog park” thing (they meet at the back of the park away from everybody so at least that’s something) look at her as though she’s a Martian in that gobsmacked “You want ME to LEASH MY DOG?!?” kind of way.
Yeah, I WANT YOU TO LEASH YOUR DOG LIKE I LEASH MINE. My dogs don’t do well with unleashed dogs running around them. Ditto a lot of other people WHO OBEY THE LEASH LAW.

(for the record if my dogs need to poop during a walk I’ll make them go to the strip of lawn alongside the street, not front yard. And yes, ALWAYS clean it up. And yes, ALWAYS avoid those houses where the owners are known to dislike dogs in general because they poop.)
And if you have an animals at large ordinance, you can trap the cats and take them to animal control. If they’re legally licensed, the owner will have to pay a fine, and if not licensed, then goodbye cat!
Yeah, I can’t give the link to the written laws of the universe but my general feeling is that might be dick move in the 'burbs, but you just have to accept it in a city. Plenty of people do it to me, again doesn’t piss me if it’s 1) plastic and 2) completely tied up. I don’t do it generally myself, public cans aren’t usually far. I sometimes toss it in one of the big cans of the bar a couple blocks into the normal morning walk, which have thick plastic bags inside the can already, my little bag neatly tied up…I’m sure I’m guilty of much worse things.
Other animals may be dumping on the lawn but I doubt any of them are meat-eaters. Birds crap on my car all the time. Does that mean its OK for your dog to poop on it as long as you clean it up? And, as a one-time trash man, I can tell you that there is little in this world that smells as bad as dog shit that’s been cooking in a trash can for a couple of days. Decaying human bodies come in a close second to that stench.
Hey, dog shit isn’t the only thing that’s nasty about your yard. Would you actually eat off your lawn, no matter how much you sprayed it clean? Yes, the sight of a dog pooping looks rude, but dogs don’t think like people. They like roadkill, plant rot and cat turds, and piss on Jesus statues. They lick their genitalia with no sense of modesty. It’s not in their nature to have good manners. I often don’t have any choice where my dogs choose to shit. It was hard enough to train them to shit outside. They have to shit somewhere, and if they find a spot and squat, I can’t really stop the process. Can’t exactly push the turd back inside either.
I admit I have deposited tied-up poop bags in empty trash cubbies, usually in those belonging to other dog owners who understand (and people who yelled at me). Otherwise, I carry them until I can find a public trash can, but sometimes the mutts inconveniently poop miles away from such receptacles. The bags can also come apart at random times, so I want to get rid of them ASAP.
So yes, half the neighborhood hates me and the other half thinks me and my dawgs are doing police-like patrols and watching out for them. Life goes on.
