I never said anything about unemployment… just about being treated as less then someone thats defended the company I work for against pissed off customers for 3 years. PTO or Paid Time Off equals all sick time and vacation time. They combine it all in one and if you want to use what you accrued (fucking shit I think that might not be the correct spelling, cowers and hopes you choke to death on a fucking chicken bone some day) … ehem… I repet, If you want to use what you accrued You must give 2 weeks notice ahead or it gets counted against you so anything less then 2 weeks is counted as sick days. I dont remember how many sick days we got per year (as they called it pto time) but YEAH I knew I was up, YES I knew I had no sick days left my last week when I called off to help my GF. I DID think that since it was my last week they would let it slide. I was wrong. They didnt. SO YES the “You deserved it” award and the “you fucking slacker” award and the “you have no right to bitch award” is due me. I suppose I have no argument either way.
However Jodi and Libertarian Can still go 69 themselves for being rude fucks.
Why a company would lay someone off rather than fire them:
In my state we have a “no cause” clause, which allows you to fire an employee and state no reason. After doing this the state picks up the cost of benefits, but do it enough times and your employer rate goes up. If you want to lose one employee and you have more than 20 you want to keep it can be very expensive if they raise your rates even a buck.
Firing vs layoffs is a similar deal. There are actually incentives sometimes to lay people off, in today’s climate the Federal government and the State are encouraging employers to lay folks off and subsidizing benefits packages, whereas a firing is not usually subsidised. Also a lot of firings can prompt an investigation into workplace conditions and raise rates for unemployment benefits for the employer.
Why someone would get written off for taking time off that they had coming to them: Well some places give you as much as two weeks PTO per year (or more). If you are leaving in a month and start calling in sick three times a week to get your time off then you fucking suck. You are making everyone else do the shitty job you hate so much, but nobody gets paid more for your absence. This is why most decent employers will give you a check for the total amount of unused PTO, including medical in most cases.
Maybe GopherGod72 worked for a total shitbird who would not provide this compensation, but GG still made the co-workers suffer for his absence and lack of foresight. Now I do feel bad he lost his job, but hell it was only one day so what is the huge problem? As an employee who has worked shit jobs I can understand the need to vacate ASAP, also as an employee who had to work a shittier job because other employees pulled similar stunts I have a little less sympathy, and finally as a former employer I would love to have someone quit with little to no notice and I would have let you go ahead and quit had it been in my state. Not worth the cost in benefits to fire you (of course this is my state’s circumstance) and I would be tickled that you had worked to eliminate your benefits, I would have given a copy of your logged absences to the benefits office.
Could you suggest that I go 69 someone? I could go for that about now.
With the number of talented people I know who were laid off because of downsizing or plant closures, I think I’ll save my weekly ration of sympathy. I can think of about 3 engineers that used only a fraction of the sick time they were allowed (if any at all) because if they weren’t sick, they wanted to work. In some cases these people even gave holiday time back to the company.
GG knows he was taking days that he didn’t have coming to him, and if he didn’t, the multiple warnings should have been a clue. His old boss seems like a decent sort, and he didn’t once consider the position he was placing his boss in. It doesn’t sound like his own superiors are too pleased with his handling of GG.
Not showing up for work is a huge inconvenience to the coworkers who must pick up the slack, and when it becomes chronic, it can be real drain on morale.
Take responsibility for your own actions, GG. You brought this on yourself, and you should ‘69’ everyone involved in gratitude that the consequences were as trivial as loosing a single day of work.
Rude? You think I was rude? I’m guessing those pissed off customers you encountered were only pissed off because they had to deal with you.
Maybe you were fired because you have the intellect of a box of hair and can’t distinguish between rude and polite. Or maybe you were fired just for being the raging asshole you’ve been in this thread. But since I coughed up whatever sympathy I had for you when I coughed up that chicken bone, I find I no longer care.
Hmmm, I was on your side until you admitted that you were more or less in violation of their policies and knew it. My experience has been that if you’re willing to work out something with your company, you can - assuming you’re a good performer and are liked by your peers and bosses. If you’re not, well, all bets are off.
And hey, if you can leave the company on a moment’s notice, they ought to be able to show you the door in the same manner - you abused them, they abused you - it’s career-based karma.
And I actually though Lib’s first comment was absolutely hilarious, and I don’t often agree with much of what Lib says. Since you were rude to Jodi without reason, I might also offer the suggestion that you’ll find a new job more quickly if you spend more time at, say, Monster.com and less time here ranting when you’re in the wrong.
I admit, the situation sucks. However, you really overreacted back there. I really don’t have an opinion over whether you “deserved” what you got or not. And I’ll even agree that Lib’s comment was unnecessarily harsh and rude.
BUT. Nowhere in Jodi’s post was she ever rude to you. She was simply asking for the facts of the situation, and even added in her next post that she was especially trying not to come off as saying “You deserved it!” She made a point that, as your next post revealed, turned out to have a lot of truth behind it. And she did so in a very polite way.
In short, you owe her an apology. And yes, Lib owes you one. That may be asking too much of Lib, but I’m hoping it’s not asking too much of you, as well.
