God damn ('scuse me God) I fucking HATE Windows 98. It’s the sorriest excuse for an operating system.
My Win 95 machine has been running like a purring kitten for over a year now, and yes it needs a reboot because it’s 2 1/2 years old, more than half the processor, half the RAM, 1/3 the video capabilities, 1/2 the storage capacity, YET…I have to fuck around with this piece of shit operating system unless I go with Win 2000 which I refuse to do until 6 months after public release.
Win 98 can’t decide when to let go of programs you have long since closed out…fuck I hate this piece of shit OS.
I have 7 windows open, 7 of which are IE (all Straight Dope) and one AOL window open, but I have fucking restarted this machine 3 times today because Win 98 can’t handle its self…
Hey, if you are a Linux fan, kiss my butt, there are too many bugs I hear about with it, so don’t give me some Linux song and dance.
All I want is to put Win 95 on here, at least it understands a better solution to handling resources!
Sounds like my machine at work, which I had to re-boot no less than a dozen times today. We use Yardi Systems software, which crashes continuously. Two remote locations can’t even access the system because Yardi crashes Citrix.
The machine I have at home is a humble HP6535, 466 celeron, 128meg RAM,Win98 2nd. It runs flawlessy for me here-although I’ve had to reload all the software a couple of times due to my continual ‘tweaking’ efforts. I like to play around with utilities, and managed to blow everything up with McAfee. Now I’ve got Norton Utilities, which seem to be more foolproof. I pasted a sign on the monitor which says “If it Works, Don’t Fix It”, just to remind myself of my technical limitations.
I was about to go for DSL, when I discovered something called NetBoost '99. It cost $30, but along with all the Win98 Updates, it makes IE fly, faster even than the ISDN, or TI, or whatever it is we have at work. (We’ve got our own website onsite.)

My experience with 98 has been the opposite of yours. My Win95 box was nicknamed “Ol’ Blue” because after using memory/processor intensive programs (Photoshop was the main culprit) I’d invariably get the old blue screen of death. Since upgrading to Win98 (SE2) I’ve had a relatively problem free computer, especially when using Netscape 4.7.
I’ll agree with you on Win2000- I’m not touching that thing with a 4 month pole.
I purchase a lot of Gateway machines for work, the only major problem I have seen is with its shut down. I can’t for the life of me figure it out, but Win98 has a problem with shut down, combined with (what I assume is) Gateway hardware.
I can’t pinpoint it because I don’t have access to all the hardware (aka I don’t know specifics) that is in the machines. Other than that, I have had good luck.
Keep in mind I am a hardcore user of a computer and demand a lot more out of it than a normal user.

Hey and Calif…my bitches at you (just so you know) are directed at those threads in particular. I have nothing against you, but I have to voice my opinion even if it is harsh. So in other threads, I will be civil even though I am harsh in others.

slythe,
I have used Norton utilities and other such programs in the past and it does nothing but mess up and create more problems…I wont even run ANY virus software because of the problems I have experienced with them…trust me on this.
Oh and aha…I have come to the conclusion that it has EVERYTHING to do with the updates I did and have done off Microsoft’s web site. So be aware of that, the machines I have “failed” to update off the site don’t have the same problems…aka, I have installed the so-called “shut down” patch. (Win98 SE does not have have this patch according to my findings).
So far that has not been the problem with this machine since I haven’t installed the freakin’ patch.
3)It should run the “System Configuration Utility”
A) Put a bullet next to “selective startup”
B) Take all the checks out except process win.ini and system.ini
c) Click apply/Okay, (it might put a check back in config.sys, that’s okay.) it will prompt for a restart, click yes.
After it restarts you will notice that all the extraneous crap that runs in the background is gone from the systray. A lot of these programs are tsr’s (terminate and stay resident) and they can cause all kinds of shit, much like what you are understandably pissed about.
Try that. If that don’t work, let me know, and we can look a lil deeper.
Snoogans.

Just picked up yer flame in the other thread (good job)…no hard feelings…everybody’s got to blow off a little steam now and then.
I’m sure you probably know all about this (being a techchick and all), but this helps:
Setup the machine as a network server rather than a desktop.
Set the virtual memory min and max to about 3x RAM.
The accumulated benefit of these and other tweaks adds up.
Thanks Calif…I do have that exact set up on my Win95 machine, and thanks for letting me blow off steam…you aint so bad after all… I will be kinder in the future.
Santi hun, I will look further into that, but those Gateway machines at work are kicking my ass, 2 in particular…

Have you tried doing a BIOS upgrade on the machines at work? I went round-n-round with a couple Gateway systems and 98SE a while back, and things cleared up as soon as I flashed the BIOSes and dumped the TSRs–I was pretty much at the same point you are now.
The new betas and patches are due in my mailbox in about 10 days, so… if you keep having problems, drop me a note, and I’ll search 'em up for you.

Ok, this could incorrectly lead to unintended assumptions.
Let’s modify that to read:

When you rename these files, they will be automatically rebuilt by the next program that needs them. So you don’t need to create new ones.
Johnlarrigan=not the guy I would take advice about anything from. Especially running a PC.
