Fuji X100S mirrorless camera

Has anyone had experience with this camera? I’m looking to buy a new camera for an upcoming trip and I’ve seen some good reviews for this. I like its portability, and the idea of a fixed lens, but wondering how it holds up in real-world use. It’s outside my budget but I can stretch.

A good start:

Which you probably already saw…
Historically, I’ve had great success with cameras I’ve purchased from Fuji thru the years. Mostly P&S, but I had an ST901 which I loved way back when.

Plus Fuji was in the digital race from near the start, making giant, super expensive DSLRs from Nikons for early pro digital use.
.

Wow!

I just read some very in depth reviews on Amazon. This camera sounds awesome.

Look at the reviews from Tsur and Mark Kitaoka and a not so glowing review from Ben. Very informative posts by these guys.

Don’t plan on being able to find one by a specific date.

I ordered mine in April and finally gave up on delivery in early June.
Besides, I deeply missed having interchangeable lenses, from my SLR days.

I ended up buying the X-Pro 1 with a 35mm f/1.4 lens (50mm equivalent), and it’s the best camera I have ever had.

What does that have to do with the X100S? They have the exact same sensor and pretty much the same guts. The lenses are different (the X100s has a wider angle lens), but I’m certain that you will love it. The pictures are great.

If you want something in the middle and have some extra cash, look at the Fuji XE1: it is the mind meld of the X-Pro 1 and the X100s, costing much less than the X-Pro 1 but providing virtually the same features (it doesn’t have the optical viewfinder).

They have even released a less expensive mirrorless interchangeable lens camera called the XM1 that is more of a point-and-shoot.
They all use the XF Lens System (except for the fixed-lens X100s).

Sizewize they go x100s < XM1 < XE1 < XPro1.

Checking in to add an update: x100 is the real deal. x100s can only be better.

Here’s my new post in an older thread on mirrorless cameras.

Short version: I just bought a used x100 while looking for a lens for my X-Pro1, and I am stunned and amazed at how good a camera it is.
It’s my new backup camera. It hasn’t displaced the X-Pro1 as my favorite, but the size and performance and looks make it my favorite “take anywhere” camera.

The images are excellent, the lens provides reasonable bokeh for a fixed-lens camera, the controls are sweet. Just don’t expect to manually focus it with a flick of your wrist and you’ll be happy.

Mind you, this is the x100, the two-year-old “camera of the year” of 2011. The x100s (newer version) has fixed most of the annoyances of the x100.

If you can get one and if you can afford one, I think you will love the x100s.
