Full suspension Mountian Bikes

I have a Jamis Dakar Pro Mountian Bike (2000). Will I damage the suspension system by hanging it upside down from the wheels.

I don’t have an answer, but I’d like to welcome UNIMATRIXONE
to the SDMB, as he is a co-worker of mine at Ballys Park Place.

Welcome to SDMB, UNIMATRIXONE.

I wish I could answer your question (with my family owning a bike shop and all) but hubby is away for the day and he’s the expert. I hope someone will be in before he gets back to answer your question.

I suspect the answer is no, but don’t quote me on that!

Oh come on, somone was going to do that, might as well be me.

I’m also guessing, but I’d say no. The bike can’t weigh that much… I’d be more worried about your body weight overcompressing the springs than the weight of the bike stretching them out.

The bike weighs what, 20 lbs? If you hang it from the wheels, each spring will only be supporting half that weight, compared to most of your body weight being supported by the rear suspension when you’re riding.

This question has come up in my local mountain bike mag (MBR in the UK) a couple times, they say there’s no problem.

Just went looking at the specs on your machine.

You will have no problem with the forks as they are air/coil springs.

The rear shock might is mounted almost horizontally but would still allow the oil to flow to the wrong end of it.
I would think you will be fine as long as you give it ten minutes or so to stand the right way up before you ride.

There have been reports of the gas/oil mix not separating properly causing the shock to make a squishing sound , and reducing the effectiveness in worst cases, on some of them, so I would definately make sure that your bike got that ten minutes settling time.

You will have no trouble with any of the other components.

If you’d rather store it on it’s tires in the upright position, there’s a real nice spot for it in my secure garage.
