Fun with Google Translate....

I was messing around with the Thai keyboard on my iPad (a freind at work is from Thailand and she’s been teaching me a little bit about the written language) and got an interesting bot of gibberish when I pasted it into google translate, so I figured, what the heck…

Post some text from a language you do not speak or understand, bung it into google translate, and post the translation to your native tongue, see if anything interesting happens…

Like this;
นพึไท_ขีสหาๅๆสพวภเเบพบๆา_ะขะสฯภะนพบนำดจขฯคัญ๋๊ญ๋ฌฯบำยำสา_กาต_กต่ำดจขาำดนขทๆกขนท๓ะขพาตข_ทะตจ

Translates to;

The genie liberated _ Ride Haๅ a preview to Saturday’s discovery was the _ will Kha states uth found the knife’ll’s important develop Sean’s Bam salad for _-due _ a lower edge Kam’s side with. Hair removal with the 3 will take the text Stewart _ pan.

Looks like this is the most recent “Fun with Google Translate” thread so I’ll just leave this here.

Are there any automated translation systems that still render “Out of sight, out of mind” as “Invisible idiot”?

Go online and find a joke, about ten lines long. Translate that into Thai, and then the Thai version into Swedish, then to Urdu, then to Japanese, then to Polish, then back to English. See if it’s still funny.

I’ve tried this and I suspect that the translator is designed to translate Thai–>Polish into English first, then English to Polish, and not directly from Thai to Polish. So this would not really be as amusing as one would expect it to be. The English versions in between would keep un-corrupting the drift.

Old apocryphal story from long before Google translate. Automated translation computer took the following in English: “the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak” translated it to Russian, then back to English, and got: “the vodka is good but the meat is spoiled.”

Here is a contest run by the Washington Post asking people to do just this. These are real results.

There used to be a website that would do this all in one step. You entered the message, hit the button, and it ran the message through several languages and back to English.

An old thread Sadly, that site closed years ago, and I haven’t found a good replacement.

A few weeks ago my husband was for some reason watching a video of Waylon Jennings doing MacArthur Park, subtitled in Portuguese.

No way that’s not going to look like a bad Google translation.

You used to be able to get Google Translate to beatbox by pasting some gibberish and having it say it in German, but it doesn’t seem to work anymore. It depended on a male voice to recite it, and all I get are female voices now.

FWIW, here’s the gibberish:

pv zk bschk pv zk pv bschk zk pv zk bschk pv zk pv bschk zk bschk pv bschk bschk pv kkkkkkkkkk bschk bschk bschk pv zk bschk pv zk pv bschk zk pv zk bschk pv zk pv bschk zk bschk pv bschk bschk pv kkkkkkkkkk bschk bschk bschk pv zk bschk pv zk pv bschk zk pv zk bschk pv zk pv bschk zk bschk pv bschk bschk pv kkkkkkkkkk bschk bschk bschk pv zk bschk pv zk pv bschk zk pv zk bschk pv zk pv bschk zk bschk pv bschk bschk pv kkkkkkkkkk bschk bschk bschk pv zk bschk pv zk pv bschk zk pv zk bschk pv zk pv bschk zk bschk pv bschk bschk pv kkkkkkkkkk bschk bschk bschk

Try that in Albanian or Esperanto.

OK, that wasn’t interesting.
