Todd Bridges (of DIFFRENT STROKES fame) also makes the rounds of Fundie programs, citing faith as saving his life
Richard Kiel (“Jaws” from the Bond movies) became born again and now works as a traveling minister, accroding to his imdb page.
Yeah, but just how fundie is she now? She seems to be pretty gay-positive and while I know that attitudes toward gays aren’t a litmus test for fundementalist beliefs, they’re usually a pretty good indicator. On the other hand, I’ve certainly met my share of openly-gay fundies, so who knows. . .
Actually, a better parallel would be “Doss”, which is a common coloquialism for Ultra-Orthodox Jews.
Especially with regard to Mel Gibson, the term fundamentalist may not apply. He’s simply a very devout, observant member of a Catholic subsect which has rejected the use of vernacular language in Mass. Officially, the mainstream Catholic Church does not reject the principle of evolution, which more or less disqualifies it from being considered fundamentalist. I don’t know if Mel Gibson’s sect accepts evolution, though.
I actually learned about this from seeing a one-woman play where an actor portrayed a parochial schoolteacher. Just before intermission, she asked the audience how old we thought the Church considered mankind to be. And when we returned, we were told that the Church’s official view now accepted the ancient origin of earth and life. I’m not Catholic, so I was rather surprised; I thought the official view on the Creation was in accord with Christian fundamentalism.
I think supermodel Kathy Ireland and singer Donna Summer fall into the category of fundamentalist Christians.
Kathy Ireland is a Unitarian, so while she’s a churchgoer, I don’t think she qualifies.
Kim Alexis, on the other hand, did turn born again. I believe this was years after her modeling career, though.
Denzel Washington (Pentecostal) and Kevin Smith (Catholic) are regular church-goers. I doubt that qualifies them as “fundamentalists” but they clearly are religious.
Denzel Washington is quite plausibly fundamentalist, based on what I’ve read. On the other hand, I don’t think Kevin Smith is a fundamentalist by any stretch of the imagination.
Do Fundamentalists refer to themselves as “Fundies?”
My problem with the word is that it’s so dismissive. This person has an irrational attachment to literal interpretation of the Bible and any other ideas or achievements they have are overshadowed by it. Sorry, but this thread has the needed ingredients for a witch hunt, or maybe a blacklist.
Yeah, conservative Christians are so persecuted in this country. It’s a shame really, that they can’t find somebody to represent them politically.
Damn, Sampiro, where did you get all that info? Are you on some sort of “Celeb Fundy Watch” mailing list?
Eegah! Eegah’s a fundy?
I didn’t start this as a witch hunt, I was just curious. By “fundy” I mean mostly out of the mainstream, very intolerant of other beliefs, etc.
The word “fundy” is usually used with people who are extreme zealots, with a high intolerance of anyone who disagrees with their beliefs, thinks they should aggressively convert others to their cause, etc.
Mel Gibson-his branch is Sedevecantists-they reject every Pope after Pius XII as being illegitimate. (According to Mel’s pappy, Vatican II was a Mason-Jewish conspiracy, or something like that)
What about “Dr.” Laura Shitslinger? If you’re not Jewish or Christian, according to her, you’re part of a phony religion?
Oh, and just because someone’s a minister, doesn’t necessarily mean they’re a fundy. Mister Rodgers, for example, was an ordained Presbyterian minister and I’d be hardpressed to identify him as a fundamentalist.
Kevin Smith is Catholic, but a VERY liberal one.
I believe that’s an example of what Krokodil was talking about.
Carol Lawrence, a Broadway star in the 60’s, shows up on these fundy Christian programs every once in a while. Efrem Zimbalist Jr, actor, does likewise. Gary Busey, mentioned previously, he of way too many motorcycle-induced head injuries, into the mix as well. I presume their appearances on these shows is an outgrowth of faith, also prompting their “shilling for the Lord”. If they’re simply looking for exposure, there are other ways to get it.
Dolores Hart became a nun; that’s pretty hard-core.
Well I’m glad I can start using “Heb”. It is, after all, just an abridgement of Hebrew.
Using the term reduces a group of people to a stereotype. Doesn’t seem too innocent to me.
BTW I am not a Fundamentalist or even religious at all.
I know quite a few Jews who call themselves “Heebs”. So if the test is “do they call themselves that”, as was brought up by another poster, then yes, “Heeb” passes the test.
Sure that works. Ever listen to rap or hip-hop? Is it OK for me to use the N-word?
Personally I don’t call Jews Hebrews. I call them Jews, which is an abridgement of Judaic.
