Fundy celebrities?

I suppose you could shorten the word “Hebrew” (as in the language) to Hebe, but nobody would be likely to know what you were talking about. (Of course being from a Fundamentalist family, “Fundy” is much nicer than my preferred terms and actually I consider “fundamentalist” itself an insult.)

Alessan:

I’ve never heard it…is that meant to be a shortening of “Dati”? (A term for Orthodox Jews more used in Israel than in America)

Is this a whoosh? You have never heard Hebe used as a derogatory term? I’ve heard it used a lot more often than most other derogatory terms for Jews.

Yes, but you said it was acceptable because it was an abridgement by the terms of Fundy for fundamentalists; this would only be so if Hebrew and Jew were interchangable, which they are not, and if Fundy had a history of being used in a persecutorial way, which it doesn’t. Fundies are in fact more likely to be the persecutors than the persecuted in conservative regions of the country.

Besides which, Fundy v. Hebe is a hijack. While I didn’t write the OP, etiquette suggests you please take it elsewhere (either it’s own GD or a Pit thread).

Back on topic - isn’t Prince quite the religious guy?

I said it was acceptable because I was using sarcasm. Go back and reread the post.

“Fundy” has a history of being used in a derogatory way around here. I get very pissed about religious intolerance. I know its funny coming from someone who goes to church only for weddings and funerals. Try telling me that fundy is used on this board as a term of endearment. It’s used to belittle and insult a large group of people due to their religious beliefs. I also can’t stand any fundamentalists that are intolerant of my views, but I judge them as individuals.

Sure I’ll get back on the topic. I have heard he is a practicing Jehovah’s witness.

Heeb: The New Jew Review

Agreed

Pretty much - it’s from the Yiddish pronunciation of “dat” (religion). Many Haredim (especially Ashkenazic ones) refuse to speak modern Hebrew, and pronounce the soft Tav as a “S” instead of a “T”, as well as “Europeanizing” the vowels.

Frankly, I’m not crazy about using the term myself. Although it’s really no worse than saying “fundie”, it’s just not that classy.

Someone above mentioned Ralph Waite as a fundamentalist celebrity. He was also listed as an avid Republican.

However, Waite is a Democrat and has even run for Congress twice as a Democrat (he lost both times).

Waite has also appeared in several John Sayle’s films including his most recent one “Silver City”, so I think someone must be thinking of a different member of the Waltons cast.

Well, I don’t claim to be an expert on Kathy Ireland’s life, but she sure doesn’t sound like a standard Unitarian here:

And I’ve seen her on Bill Maher’s “Politically Incorrect” preaching against abortion.

I know the Unitarian Church is supposed to be pretty inclusive, but still…

Johnny Cash.

He’s resting, dammit.

He is at that. He’s also pro-choice (the “I’m against it personally but would keep it legal” school). My bad- withdrawn with apologies. (He is an ordained Presbyterian minister, but is apparently malleable on social issues.)

Well, it’s possible that her beliefs have changed through the years. I have found one reference which claims that she attends a non-denominational church, so it is quite plausible that her church allegiances have shifted.

Her pro-life stance, FTR, came about after reading some medical textbooks. So while this may align with her current religious views, it was scientifically motivated. (Rather like the way Dr. Bernard Nathanson became pro-life while he was still an atheist.) For reasons like this, I would hesistate to conclude that someone is a fundamentalist (or even a theist) on the grounds that that person is pro-life.

On the non-Christian front, Cat Stevens, Muhammad Ali and Kareem Abdul Jabbar are devout Muslim converts.

Sampiro: You gave a fairly detailed list of Chrisitan Fundamentalist actors (along with a dispariging comment for each one of them). Perhaps you could also have added the following for each of the above:

Yusaf Islam (Cat Stevens): Fundamentalist Mostlem (perhaps even radical) who follows the Wahhbbist (sp) Islamic school. Considered a terrorist threat by Israel and openly sympathetic to Moslem-only causes.

Muhamma Ali: Moslem convery with several children out of wedlock. Most likely has boxing induced brain damage.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar: Converted to Islam. Pot smoker who was arrested for possession. Reputed to be a miserable individual.

Fair enough. In fact add
Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam: no longer records because he finds the music industry & rock music sinful, but lives off the estimate $15 million he racked up before retiring and the considerable publishing rights he still rigidly controls from his “sinful” past life. (In fairness he gives millions to [mostly Islamic] charities and has built several mosques with his fortune, but he continues to live in a rambling mansion from his music fortune.)

There’s no debate about whether Ali has boxing induced brain damage. A word on his conversion: he converted to the Nation of Islam (not recognized by most Islamic religions as a Muhammad inspired sect) and was a close friend of Malcolm X and sided with the Nation against Malcolm. His agents & managers were the sons of Elijah Muhammad and his tithes and commissions were a major source of income to that family and the Nation itself (he was the single wealthiest member of the NoI with the possible exception of Elijah M. himself). When he dropped the Muhammads as his managers due to incompetence and fiscal mismanagement he was expelled from the Nation and has since adapted a more mainstream Islamic stance as did Elijah Muhammad’s son Wallace (with whom he is still friends). The Nation’s pseudoliterate rant about the subject is here

[QUOTE=Lochdale]

I’m told by people who know that it’s extremely unusual for a professional basketball player to not smoke dope, so let’s not use this as an example of his Islamic depravity. Also, the only vaguely intolerant thing I’ve ever heard him say about other religions was the time he called the Nation of Islam a “cult.” Not exactly handling snakes and sipping strychnine now, is it?

I find it interesting that so many of the celebrities mentioned (Willie Ames, Todd Bridges, Ralph Waite, Gavin Macleod, Lisa Welchel) are really *washed-up * celebrities.
