Funkiest song ever

This was the first 45 I ever owned.

Funky, yes. I gotcha. Uh huh huh thought I didn’t see ya, now didn’t ya.

But I still am voting for “The Jam” from Larry Graham.

Great choice, EinsteinsHund, but edged out ever so slightly by If You Want Me to Stay, arguably the Funkiest Song Ever Written™.

And the bassist for that group?

Larry Graham!

Check out “The Jam” live at Montreux (Earth Wind and Fire appeared the same year)

:stuck_out_tongue:

I’m going to have to go with the former Mrs. Miles Davis, the fabulous, the funky Batty Davis, with her track “Anti-Love Song”.

First of all, just listen to it. That shit would make Stephen Hawking shake his ass. Second, check out the musicians she got together for the album it comes from:

* Neal Schon (Santana/Journey) - guitar
* Gregg Errico (Sly & The Family Stone) - drums
* Larry Graham (Sly & The Family Stone and eponym of Graham Central Station) - bass (he is credited with inventing the slap/thump bass style)
* Patryce Banks (Graham Central Station) - percussion
* Willie Sparks (Graham Central Station) - drums
* Hershall Kennedy (Graham Central Station) - horns
* Greg Adams (Tower of Power) - horns
* Mic Gillette (Tower of Power) - horns
* Merl Saunders - electric piano
* Pete Sears - acoustic piano
* The Pointer Sisters - background vocals

Third, I mean, this is the woman that got Miles Davis to name his album “Bitches Brew”. Funk by the gallon.

I do think Flashlight is right up there, as is Brick House.

I saw some James Brown, but I don’t recall seeing Get Up Offa That Thing, which is definitely near the top of the list.

And I have to throw some love the way of Groove is in the Heart - not only funky, but probably the only known Dr. Seuss reference in funkdom.

Let Granny tell you about…

Ohio Players - Funky Worm

…“like nine cans of shaving powder, that’s funky!”

Now what do you think I’m going to say?

“Dogs of the world unite” ?

As for the ultimate in danceable funk/electronica/house/etc…, we can’t forget Egyptian Lover and his beat driven mega mixes.

What is an emcee if he can’t rap, what is a DJ if he can’t scratch, what is a beat without the live clap, well I can do it all, baby, just like that!

Not pure funk (by my own definition), but buck for sure.

I’ll second “Pusher Man” by Curtis Mayfield.

I’ll add “Love on the Run” by Galactic

Pass The Peas, by the JBs.

I haven’t seen them live since I first moved to New York. I love them.

My favorite would be Sir Duke.

Ok, I’m not a huge fan of ‘funk’, true. But Atomic Dog is my sheeeiiittt!

Bwahahahaha… Little Dvl just arrived in the world last night (wooooo HOOOO!) … moment of entry was to Flashlight.

Awesome! Congrats! Pictures!

Now THAT’S funky!
