Fur rears it's new head and I won't stand for it!

I’ve always wondered about this: if the anti-fur people succeed in destroying the fur industry, animals raised for their fur will no longer be commercially raised. So, in effect, the anti-fur folks will be performing millions of pre-emptive abortions, in a manner of speaking, by preventing the breeding of these animals.

So which is preferable: a short life, or never being born at all?

“When minks rule the world they can wear me” – Joy Behar

You know, I had a fake fur coat and only wore it twice. It was a present from my aunt. I hated it-the first time I wore it, it had a huge collar that came up around my head, and the fur would sort of drift off and into my mouth. Icky!
And it was STATICKY as all get out.

I love me some chicken, but egads, fur coats are just tacky. I saw approximately 37,000 on Fifth Avenue in New York this weekend, and my jaw just dropped every time. I’ve really never seen one in person before, and therefore I’ve never felt strongly either way about it, but it was just…horrible. Cruel. As much as I hate to stereotype, every last one I saw was on some fab-oo-lus Fifth Avenue matron with perfectly coiffed hair, and Vuitton bag and Manolas on her feet.

Come one, folks, you get just as much warmth from a parka even if it doesn’t look quite as elegant and rich.

I stopped watching Days of Our Lives when Hope (I think, maybe Marlena) had four evil doppelgangers, and it just got too confusing.

'Sides, a black trenchcoat is much cooler…

Or, if you wanna go that film noir look, a TAN trenchcoat. And matching hat.

I own, and I bought myself, a fox coat. Ranch bred, no leg hold traps, no wild suffering animals.

Sure, if we treat you nice before we kill you and make a coat out of your skin, then it’s okay.

Diane - Who still misses All My Children (remember Greg and Jenny?) since becoming employed 15 years ago.

I object to fur coats but only because I’ve yet to see a single one compliment a female or male figure. Fur coats make the wearer look like a shaggy bear no matter what the source of the fur is.

For me, the only acceptable way to wear a fur coat is for a woman to wear it with nothing but sexy lingerie underneath… and the coat comes off the second she steps through my door.

Doesn’t Joey have another series now? “Mac and C.H.E.E.S.E.”

Are there some regions, like in Siberia, where people NEED fur?

In the past, I’m sure it was needed.

I assume you’d be just as angered over the overuse of leather, right? Baseball must REALLY piss you off.

Cows aren’t cuddly. Ergo, nobody cares about cows. (except for the crazy PETA people, for whom I have NO respect at all.

No offense Diane, but yes, it does make it ok. Just like cattle ranches, egg farms and dairys.

Ever see Rent?

Can’t say I have. Did I pseudoplaigiarize?

We kill cows to make jackets out of them and then we kill each other to get the jackets we made out of the cows.

let me ask you this, would you choose short life full of suffering, or to never have been born at all?

I dont believe in the fur trade, even though I like to eat meat. (I havent had the offer to eat veal, so I cant say wether I would turn it down or not. I probably would.)

I think that fur is an unnecessary extravagance, and that is why it is wrong.

I would never wear a fur coat because, let’s face it, they look stupid.

I have no moral objection to the use of fur. I own a dandy lambskin leather coat.

No, it’s not okay. I know a family who owns a mink farm in Northern Utah. As far as mink farms go, they are actually very humane, however, it is still appalling to me that these animals are raised and killed simply to provide humans an extravagant luxury.

Also, there are many cattle ranches, egg farms, and dairies that aren’t “ok”.

You do realize that it’s in the best interest of the furrier to keep his animals as healthy as possible so that their coats are attractive, right? Where’s the “full of suffering” apart from that sudden stop at the end of the ride?

I see no reason to waer real fure, and I think the peddling of ridiculously-overpriced luxury iems that don’t even keep you as warm as a good Gore-Tex jacket is ridiculous.
What I want to know is why anti-cruelty activists, like the ones in this thread, only get indignant about the mistreatment of cuddly-looking animals? What about snakes and gators being killed for leather? What about snails and fish raised for food? It does seem that there is a strong pro-mammal bias, and that y’all only care about cruelty to
cute animals.

Also bear in mind that if you succeed in ending the fur and meat industries, minks, cows, and sheep, etc, would be killed anyway to avoid the cost of keeping useless, unprofitable stock around.

True, but it would also stop the mass reproducing.

I agree with the things you said about “cute animals”. It seems that aligators, snakes, and sharks receive a lot less compassion than the adorable baby seals or the furry little mink (although they are meaner than shit).

In an age of synthetic and fiber matterial, there is no longer a need, or an excuse, for humans to wear animal skin.

Did y’all see the snippet on the news the other night about the fur protest (in LA I think)? A very pretty young lady was out on the street wearing nothing but a smile and a sandwich board that said “I’d rather go naked than wear fur.” Didn’t change anybody’s mind, but got press and that was the point.

I don’t have a problem with fur, sorry. Comes with being at the top of the food chain, I guess. Remember, things get worse towards the top, not better- more violence, cruelty, etc.

I have some GREAT leather jackets, I don’t have a fur coat because I live in SoCal & don’t need one. But I won’t rule one out at some later date. My mom has a beautiful fox coat that she doesn’t get to wear much around here. But when I lived in CO, I had a great suede coat lined with real shearling. Should I have lain awake nights thinking about dead cows and shivering sheep? Because I didn’t.

I also wear leather sneakers, would love a croc bag, and cook an out-of-this-world osso buco (veal shank, for the uninitiated). Everyone needs something to be outraged about, I guess- my thing just isn’t fur.
