Futurama 7/22/10

I loved it when Bender unscrewed his head, put it into his cabinet, and screamed, “NOOOOOOOOOOO!”

huh. i thought the beginning was classic futurama humor. hermes’ cubicle given as coordinates of a giant cube, the pencil sharpener and the disposal of the pencil, and scruffy all got big laughs out of me.

mexico had its fair share of gags too, notably adobe photo shoppe and “how is it her” -> “howitzer”.

innnnnnteresting…

Well, for one thing I was never terribly into Star Wars, so the opening was a very ‘‘huh?’’ sort of situation for me. And while I liked the cubicle/giant cube concept, the whole ‘‘Hermes the bureaucrat’’ theme reminded me so much of the pre-reboot episode of a similar theme that I actually began to question whether this was actually a rerun. So for a lot of the episode I kept thinking, ‘‘Have I seen this before?’’ which was kind of distracting.

I missed this-when’s the repeat?

I liked Mom’s line:

“That’s what you get when you call tech support.”

Even though I (like most others) guessed the “twist” before it was revealed, I loved the little ending montage. Very “Leela’s Homeworld” in its heartstring-tugging.

The last three episodes have been fantastic. Lots of big ideas, geeky jokes, quotable lines, and satisfying emotional payoffs. It’s really starting to feel like Futurama never left.

Probably next week. They’ve been repeating the previous week’s new episode each Thursday before showing the new episode.

Sooner than that. According to my onscreen cable guide, the episode will be repeated on Comedy Central at the following times:

Monday, 12:00 AM
Tuesday, 12:30 AM
Tuesday 8:30 PM
Wednesday 9:30 PM
Thursday 9:30 PM

So there are plenty of opportunities to catch it again before the next episode. These times are Pacific time, so make adjustments for your own time zone.

I liked the episode until the last five minutes when they did such a blatant bullshit callback to Jurassic Bark. That one was great. The reference in the “movies” was okay, But trying to copy the same sense so clumsily, well that makes me feel angry.

This wasn’t like Jurassic Bark in any way except that they ramped up the emotion at the end. Tanbarkie is right that it was kind of similar to the episode where we find out Leela’s parents were always watching out for her.

I thought this was one of the best episodes of the series. Almost all of the jokes worked for me, and I liked the Bender and Hermes pairing in addition to the story itself. Bender dealing with his mortality was a very good idea.

Perhaps it was a callback to Luck of the Fryrish. They’ve gone to the sap well more than once (though I generally like it, sap that I am…)

ETA: Er, this was meant to be, in a slightly more subtle way, another “This wasn’t like Jurassic Bark in any way except that they ramped up the emotion at the end” post, but now the point’s already been made.

My all-time favorite Futurama episode is “How Hermes requestioned his groove back”, so this was a pleasant surprise for me. I thought baby Bender was a bit jarring (is he really supposed to age?) and also the connection between Bender and Hermes felt strangely convenient, considering Hermes is from Jamaica. However, it was a very good episode. I loved the calculator gag, also loved seeing Hermes bureaucracy skills in action when he cleaned up after Lela. I feel like the Futurama team is slowly but steadily getting back to what made the series great.

I really enjoyed that, but isn’t there an earlier episode that shows Bender being ‘born’ fully ‘grown’ and getting his college degree?
