Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder

I had forgotten that there were only going to be four movies made. And then in the last scene I realized this was the last one and it made me all sad.

Ok, I watched it again, and I definitely got more out of it. It probably had the best jokes out of the four movies. I think, ultimately, the restrictions of making these “movies” conform to a 4-part, episodeable structure was more than anyone could’ve completely overcome, but they did the best job humanly possible. In the end, they got one great movie (Big Score) and 3 good movies out of it, and hopefully earned the show another chance for new episodes.

At least that’s not the lowest grade imaginable!

Just saw it…and the plot holes and pointless plots really took the movie away from me.

Also, I don’t think it was all that particularly funny. I have yet to watch it with commentary, but overall I am kinda sad to see them go out on this note, I was hoping for better.

My order would be"

  1. Bender’s Game (The funniest of the three by FAR)
  2. Big Score (The most poignant)
  3. Beast (The lesser of the two evils)
  4. Yonder (The more evil, but I didn’t like this movie or “Beast” at all)

This is my ranking too, but I could see after a few more viewing, Green could pass Score.

Did anyone think the animation of Green was much sharper than any of the past movies?

Yonder was much better than Bender’s Game (Owls and I have pretty much decided to pretend Game doesn’t exist) and so was a welcome addition to the series. Not sure if I’d say its better than Score, but both were pretty good. Beast was passable, Game just sucked IMHO. The characters were all caricatures of themselves (especially Leela), and the sidetrip into D&D land was a complete break from everything the series is.

The only worthwhile bit of it was the ‘whale oil’ joke it allowed into the forth movie.

Bender had aces, Fry had kings.

I still don’t get why the random female symbol in Fry’s head made him able to read minds.

Zapp Brannigan needs to get his own spin off Star Trek parody show.

I guess my ranking now would be:

  1. Score
  2. Bwabb/Yonder (can’t decide)
  3. Game

I never do this but I might rent bwabb and Bender’s Game again. They deserve more chances.

Was the Feminista slogan writer the grandaughter of the lawyer Zoidberg used in Freedom Day?

While this was true in the first hand, mr. jp made a valid comment about their last hand. Fry had aces and Bender had a king and a coaster to make the 5-of-a-kind hand. Although on second viewing, the shape of the coaster (square) does not match the rectangular card shown many times face-down. (continuity error, or was Bender cheating?)

Yes, she was. That family cracked me up, but Old Man Waterfall was my favorite.

I thought it kind of acted as an antenna. Not that I’m interested in nitpicking the science/logic of that. It’s a plot device - I accept the absurdity and move on.

His rendition of “Hungry Like the Wolf” was clearly meant as a Shatner parody. I wonder why they couldn’t have gotten Shatner to himself voice the recurring character of Zapp. The Simpsons is able to get some genuine actors (Kelsey Grammer, for example) to do them, Futurama should have had enough Hollywood capital based on Groening’s Simpsons success to swing something like that.

My new favorite gag, that only a traditional Jew would get - during one of the tellings of the Dark Ones vs Encyclopods story that #9 Man recites, the audience boos and twirls Graggers upon hearing the Dark One mentioned. That’s a reference to the (soon upcoming) Jewish holiday of Purim, when such noisemaking is done to drown out Haman’s name during the reading of the Book of Esther. Man, they really pack in the obscure ones!

cmkeller: If you like Haman jokes, you should see the movie For Your Consideration. A true classic.

It’s a running gag on the show that whenever a member of the Waterfall family appears, they end up dying and being mourned by another member of the Waterfall family- who reappears and then ends up dying, and so on. All the Waterfalls are voiced by Phil Hendrie.

Free Waterfall Jr.- eaten by Lrrr in “The Problem with Popplers.” Mourned by no one.
Free Waterfall Sr.- murdered by penguins in “The Birdbot of Ice-Catraz.” Mourned by Old Man Waterfall.
Old Man Waterfall- Crushed by the Decapodian Mobile Opression Palace in “A Taste of Freedom.” Mourned by Frida Waterfall.
Frida Waterfall- leads the Feministas in Into the Wild Green Yonder. Murdered by The Dark One, mourned by no one.

Hutch Waterfall- Murdered by The Dark One. Chosen by the Encyclopod as DNA specimen for homo sapien.

It’s not obscure if you’re Jewish. I don’t know if Ken Keeler is, but I’m sure David X. Cohen is.

True, but what percentage of the audience is likely to be? And not just ethnically Jewish, but traditional enough to know about a Purim custom?

The part of Zapp was originally meant for Phil Hartman- Billy West’s Zapp voice has a bit of a Hartmanesque inflection alongside the Shatner. I don’t think the real William Shatner would have been as good as West is- Zapp’s voice has this bit of douchebaggy smarm in it that I don’t think Shatner would be able to bring to the character.

I agree: Shatner would probably not have been so merciless in making fun of himself. Some of the creators have described Zapp as William Shatner if he were really in charge of a starship. Shatner’s lately become comfortable mocking himself for being a bad actor, but for being a womanizing egomaniac? I’m not sure. It’s better to have someone else do it so nothing’s off limits.

I think Shatner would’ve done it if asked, but they might not have really given it much thought. The part was explicitly writted for Hartman. Beyond that, they might not’ve been able to afford Shatner. He’s not cheap and ISTR reading somewhere that Futurama had budget issues from the beginning (and obviously since being cancelled.)

I thought it was tedious. The whole environmental thing was boring when Mr. Wong was not on the screen blowing things up.
