The only thing I know about Gaelic pronunciation is that it’s nothing like anything I would ever come up with. However, I’m not looking for general rules here; my question involves specific words. My last name comes from “O’Sruitheain” (thank God for Anglicization!), which is a diminutive of “sruth,” meaning “stream.” How are those two words pronounced?
I’m much better at these languages written than spoken, but I’ll take a stab at it anyway.
For sruth just ignore the “th” - it’s silent - and pronounce the rest of it like it looks: sru (the “u” sound is actually somewhat closer to the vowel sound in the word book)
Sruitheain… that’s tough. I’m guessing it would be sri-hun or sri-un, short “i” sound (as in lid), accent on the first syllable.
BTW if there’s any linguist Dopers reading this please tell me if you know how to make IPA characters here. It feels silly writing “sri-hun”

BTW, the last page linked to in my prior post has those IPA symbos it required to deal with Irish Gaelic. Look at that page with Netscape Nav’s ‘View / Page Info’ to see the URLs for these symbols, to which you can then link, for any post in which you want to use them.

Strainger, best watch out! I once wanted to learn the etymology of my given name, Douglas, having heard it meant something neat like ‘dark waters’. After much delving into the naming of the Douglas River, it became clear the better translation would be: muddy river. Oh well…
