Galaxy Zoo is fun and good for science

I came across this website recently called Galaxy Zoo where they ask people help classify galaxies so the astronomers can focus on the ones they want to study.

I’ve done a hundred or so and I’ve come across some interesting things:

A pretty spiral with a bar
Galaxies merging
God watching us from space

There are also some forums there with their “Objects of the Day” – interesting things people have run across and posted.

I thought it was fun, so I figured I’d share.

I’m shocked you haven’t gotten any replies on this. I just saw it myself and wanted to thank you for the link. What a fascinating web site! I don’t yet know if I’ll be participating, but just going through the tutorial was enlightening. It’s mind-boggling to be reminded of how many galaxies there are in the universe, and these are just a tiny fraction of a tiny fraction of the whole. All those galaxies! All those stars! All those possible planets! All the possible life forms!

It’s good to be reminded every now and then that we’re just atoms on a parasite of a mite.

MrWhatsit and Whatsit Jr. have been doing this together for a while. It looks pretty nifty.
