I’m sure this has been asked multiple times, but since I can’t search without subscribing I can’t find it in previous posts. So here it is. Can someone drink a gallon of milk in one hour and keep it down for one more hour? If not, why? Also, what is the best/worst milk to use? The traditional bet is whole milk.
Yes, I have seen it done. It was only kept down for about three hours, IIRC, but it did happen. Whole milk, too. Yeah, I have no cite other than my own recollection.
i heard somewhere that its impossible because your body cant process the lactose fast enough… no cite though
Wow, I have never heard of this and I drink milk all the time, although I’m not sure I’ve ever tried to drink a gallon in an hour. I would think that at some time I must have as I’ve been known to drink two litres at a time much like some people drink Coke and I’m not sure I’m likely to try now
The L.A. radio station KLOS morning duo, Mark and Brian, decided that it sounded like crap. Why shouldn’t a person be able to hold down a gallon of milk? So a young, strapping college student agreed to drink 1 gallon of milk an hour, 1 quart every 15 minutes.
I will never, ever forget the sound of him vomiting into the mic at about 3 1/2 quarts. It was the grossest thing I have ever heard, and he did it a lot.
So yeah, I don’t think it can be done…
Yep, the lactose issue sounds plausible - plus, if that overload occurs further down the digestive system, the ‘evacuation’ will occur in the opposite direction.
Speaking as someone who has challenged people to do this on many occasions, it is not impossible, but it is very rare to come across someone who can do it.
I would say, out of the twenty-plus times I’ve seen this done, only two people have managed it. One managed to choke down a gallon in an hour, and then lost it five minutes later. Another down it down, held it for about 90 minutes, then lost it. Both of these poor guys won the bet under the specific terms it had been made.
I got disgusted too early in that thread, although I’ve posted this is yet another of the million discussions of this topic.
The reason that most people can’t do this is simply because of the high solids content of milk. “Solids” in this context is the total amount of fats, sugars, and proteins in milk.
It is not because the milk curdles in the stomach. It has nothing to do with lactose intolerance, which does not make one vomit. (Although diarrhea may surely result.)
There is nothing special about milk. Any liquid with a high solids contents will be difficult to impossible to chug a gallon of. Pea soup, for sure. The stomach handles solids in a different manner than it does liquids. It holds them for a longer time for processing. Too much distends the stomach and will force a backup. Nothing mysterious about it.
My brother did 3 liters of chocolate milk in an hour for a bet. That’s not quite 1 US gallon but close.
He said he kept it down, but felt sluggish for the rest of the day. I wonder why…
This suggests that the ability to hold down a gallon of milk will vary as the size of people’s stomachs varies. Perhaps the likes of professional trenchermen can manage it.
Wow, I never thought I was such a freak
I’ve always loved milk and have had almost a whole gallon with dinner before…
Guess I have to start hanging out where people like to bet on this stuff
I was unfortunate enough to witness two people attempt this stunt. It was a few weeks ago, over my spring break. We were all stuck here, nothing to do, hada bunch of milk that would go bad before spring break ended, so a couple guys decided to do the milk challenge. Never will I forgot the sound of them vomiting into the trash can…ugh…Of course, they made the mistake of using whole milk…chocolate whole milk, at that. If I were to do it I’d use skim milk, but whole milk is usually the type of milk stipulated in the bet. I even have pictures of them vomiting into the trash can.
“Oh God, it’s in my nose!”
I’ve tried it before. I drank about 2/3rds of a gallon and had to quit. I didn’t vomit but I felt horrible. I went home and went to bed afterwards.
I’ve seen a few other people try it. Have yet to see someone finish the gallon.
Could someone gradually build up their tolerance?
Yes. I prefer it with Hersey’s chocolate syrup.
It was a favorite challenge when I was in high school. I held the record, with a half-gallon in about 15 minutes.
What happened afterwards pretty much guaranteed that no one would challenge the record.

This website puts actual memories to the ideah for those who wish to be scarred by having seen the results of the milk challenge.
I think they tried the dopey challenge first.
On a somewhat related note, I won a bet once involving me drinking about a liter of orange soda fountain syrup at once and keeping it down for 1 hour. I proceeded to vomit the syrup up in portions, in the form of a flourescent orange goo, once every hour for the following 8 or 9 hours. The fact that I always vomit out of my nose first made this particularly unpleasant, as the smell stays with you for some time after the fact.
Suffice to say there are easier ways to make a buck(or 20 in my case).
