Joffrey’s brother Tomnen is his heir.
They follow male primogeniture, so Tommen’s next in line, but I think that Cersei’s technically in charge for the time being as Queen Regent (once again), since Tommen is still a child.
Where is Tommen? Was he the blond boy at the table (I think next to Sansa)?
We rewatched the scene a few times and didn’t see anyone else eat pie except Joffrey. No one else would be allowed to anyway before the King got his. We also noticed that Margery and Lady Tyrell both sort of nodded at the wine goblet as Tyrion approached it as if to tell him to take that one. But I’m still thinking it’s the pie. There was no way to be sure Joffrey would drink from that goblet.
But yay! The King is dead!
Yes. He was recast since we last saw him. I think that was at Blackwater?
I didn’t see it as resolve so much as discomfort/disgust/disapproval; we saw that on lots of other faces, too. YMMV, of course.
The midget humping the wolf’s head was a little too modern for the show, I think. Definitely over-the-top gauche, even for the Lannisters. I suspect that Tywin would have accelerated his plans to give Joffrey a “sharp lesson” had the little shit survived.
I watched again also and while there was a lot going on it seemed the last person to touch the cup was Margery. He took the cup from Tyrion, drank some and was fine, and handed the cup to Margery. She kind of grabbed it with two hands one which was near the rim and set it on the table.
It seemed to sit there till he demanded Tyrion serve him again. Then Margery actually pointed to the cup as if to tell Tyrion “that one right there”.
Jack Gleeson was brilliant. Really amazing. I mean, I know it’s a bit vaudevillian to praise a dramatic death scene and all, but DAMN that was good. And the make-up people too, truly outstanding.
Really quite satisfying. I think I’ll go watch it again.
I did feel horribly bad for Shae and Tyrion though. Especially Shae, as Tyrion has to some extent chosen his fate (he didn’t sail off with her after the Blackwater) but Shae is just thrown from one bad situation to the next, and she’ll have little to distract her even if she’s well cared for in Pentos.
This confused me too.
I’m sure Shae is not gone and will somehow be used against Tyrion.
The fool may have given Sansa the necklace because he knew she would not have a chance to grab anything else of value before it was time to run. I can’t imagine he is working alone.
My fear is that with Joffrey gone that Ramsey is bound to prosper because evil people getting what they deserve is not a theme of this series.
Who would Tommen as king? Maybe Tommen? Maybe Margery? Do they have levirate marriage in Westros? I hope at least one person on the council suggests Daenerys as a potential Queen. They must know she has dragons by now.
Combo poison? Ingredient in the wine reacts with an ingredient in the pie?
Joffrey, not the Lannisters as a whole. I doubt Tywin signed off on this particular bit of entertainment (though he seemed less bothered about it than various others). Could’ve even been improv by the little person himself–I doubt Joffrey got into the weeds on scripting the ‘history lesson’.
In season one Sansa asks her Septa what would happen if she only had daughters with Joffrey and she’s told that the throne would go to Joff’s little brother. Presumably that’s what will happen here, with Cersei back as Queen Regent.
The goblet Tyrion takes from the table is the one Joffrey had been using. He set it down at the the table there. Between him doing that and Tyrion picking it back up the only people with access to it were Tyrion, Margaery, Olenna, and Joffrey himself.
What motive would Margaery have for poisoning her husband? She doesn’t get any power now.
And Margery made sure to stuff cake into Joffrey’s cakehole. 95% sure the Tyrell’s are behind this.* The only question is whether the poison was in the cake, or the cup, or both. I think Tyrion being implicated was an unforeseen side-effect.
*(4% chance Dornish Prince was behind it, 1% of Little Finger, because we haven’t seen him in a while and that makes me suspicious.)
In this situation, Bronn would be toast if he stayed in King’s Landing. Even with Jamie as his new secret patron, I don’t see how he can stay around.
Goddaam, that was the most awkward episode to date. Now I am gonna have to watch a cheerful episode like the red wedding to get that out of my system.
Declan
I wonder how many real life GoT theme weddings there have been (with the cape and the vows to the seven) by now. Devoted geekdom being what it is, I’m sure they started before the series ever premiered, but I’m guessing that they’ve exponentialed in the last couple of years. It’d be kind of cool to weve in a murder mystery or paint ball game to weave in the lethal aspects.
Like the Red Wedding and Jaime’s hand, btw, this is one that all who’ve read the books should be congratulated for not spoiling, because it was really hard at times, especially at various “Wrong!” speculations with Joffrey’s fate. And nobody has spoiled that he wasn’t poisoned but just had a severe gluten allergy.
Below is a screen grab from the episode. I’m putting it in a spoiler box even though it’s only content from the show. Please weigh clicking on the spoiler box before you go through with it.
