Game of Thrones 5.02 "The House of Black and White" 4/19 [Show discussion]

We saw lots of them, except Gendry, get slaughtered. I’m not sure how we’d have any degree of confidence that all were found.

Ah, I was whooshed. I get it.

It still feels disconnected to me. I love the two characters - Jaqen and Arya. I want Arya to hone some kick ass skills. But look at her list of antagonists. It is whittled down to four names. One of whom I thought was dead already (the Mountain) and one of whom I had to look up to remember who it was (Meryn Trant).

Again, I love the characters. The actors are great. The production is great. The conflict is … muddled and lacking oomph. The story lines are a bit disconnected.

No. I remember all that quite well.

What actual place?

I was thinking the same thing … “square and triangular are taken so Jon must be getting circular”. I think I was right, but they never showed Aemon saying it.

Also, it seemed very easy to vote more than once. They didn’t seem to be taking any precautions against it.

How dare you impugn the character of the rapists and murderers who constitute the men of the Night’s Watch.

Alcazar.

They know how many men are voting, after the vote is taken it’s easy to count the number of tokens used (and the number returned unused) to check for multiple votes.

They don’t have time to show every single thing that happens, you just have to assume that they can and do handle the trivially easy stuff like counting tokens.

I must be too dense this morning—are you saying that you are surprised that Alcazar looks like Alcazar?

I should think that someone should be checking names off a roll or ensuring that each member has access to only one token of each shape.

So you’re saying that you’re impressed that the place where they filmed closely resembled the place where they filmed?

I had the same bafflement as BlackKnight regarding some viewers’ perceptions that not much is happening. While I have loved these first two episodes, I really appreciate your detailed explanation of why you are disappointed in them. I found your perspective interesting and well articulated.

I never really considered this closely, but my viewing experience is surely affected by the fact that I have read the-things-that-shall-not-be-mentioned. And your comment about “the story lines are a bit disconnected” – well, that is not an opinion that is restricted to the television show audience only.

Thanks. I love the show. I have no doubt it will get really good very soon.

It’s basically the same exact complaints we get every single season during the early episodes.

Interesting construction there. “We”? Are you a writer on the show? If this has been a common criticism 4 times in a row, why haven’t you gotten better at constructing 10 episodes with more even pacing?

To each his own and all that, but I thought this was one of the most satisfying episodes they’ve ever had. So many storylines that feel like they’ve been plodding along doing nothing suddenly have active stuff happening:
-Sam and Gilly were BOTH useful for once. Oh, and Jon Snow is now lord captain commander of the Night’s Watch
-Stuff totally happened with Brienne, and now she has a clear goal and sense of purpose
-Stuff totally happened with Danaerys
-Stuff totally happened with Arya (although obviously we don’t really know what it all means yet)
-We met a whole new region (Dorne) and were quickly introduced to a major conflict there (some of the people are desperate for vengeance, but the prince is more cautious)
-Bronn is back!
-Cersei is trying to maneuver herself into effective power, and at least some people object

the only plotline that didn’t really advance was Tyrion and Varys, who are still on the road to Mereen (by way of Volantis) (which is where Shae was from?), and at least their scene was short and funny

I’m sure he means “we” as in “this message board.” I hope you’re being deliberately obtuse. Otherwise, it’s no wonder you have trouble following the show.

Good episode, I thought. Heartbreaking to see Brienne’s offer rejected by Sansa; Littlefinger was delightfully cruel. The Imp and Varys in the carriage was a good scene; also good to see Ser Kevan stand up to Cersei. Lord Commander Snow - sweeeeet! And nice to have the third dragon come back, if only for a quick visit with Mom (who should’ve pardoned the ex-slave mask-killer after a stern don’t-do-it-again lecture).

Heh. I thought they might’ve done an anatomically-correct-colossus gag when they sailed underneath, but that would’ve spoiled the mood.

YES! Delighted that Bronn’s back. And Jaquen, too (whoever he is, or isn’t).

So it is.

There are no books. Read the OP.

We, as in “we in this threads”.

Just chiming in to say that I really enjoyed the show last night and was never unsure of where Arya was going at all (also having nothing but the show as a source).

Yeah, I figured that it was more along the lines of “we” as in our little community that is so invested it responds, as a collective, poorly to even the most remote suggestion that our beloved might be at any point in time good but not great. Yeah, that kind of “we.”
