Game of Thrones, A Golden Crown, 5/22/11

An army of savages might only require beads and trinkets, while a ship would be owned and crewed by people who trade for a living, thus reflects market reality.

I really loved the clank as Visery’s head hit the floor.

I’m gonna assume that the planet has no history of earth quakes, or they wouldn’t have what amounts to a throne room apparently overhanging a cliff edge with a convenient hole to drop people through. As far as I can tell, that castle is fully optimized for death plunging.

Do they by any chance have bungee cords?

Well damn. There goes my favorite character.

He gad it coming, and more. They should have ignored the stupid blood rule and cut off his balls first.

What a macaroon. Threatening the king’s wife and heir, and imaging he could walk away from that!

That’s one thing I really like about this series. I can really get a good hate on for some of these characters. I look forward to more satisfying deaths.

I was very surprised that Tyrion could walk away from those charges with a trial by combat of champions. Cate must have understood that, and she would seem to be smart enough to realize that it might have ultimately been resolved by combat between Jaime and Ned.

And I have to question what they mean by “the King’s justice” when it could all be resolved without the king.

Note: I’m not asking anyone to post spoilers in response to this. I’m just sharing my thoughts.

They do have a knack of finishing each episode on a dramatic note don’t they? I was hoping they would use that sublimely cold line about fire not killing a dragon and I wasn’t disappointed.

What makes the dragon eggs so valuable? Are they just very rare?

They’re very rare - and they have a high level of sentimental value to the Targaryans due to their family history.

Which reminds me: the Starks have the Dire wolf and the Targaryans have the dragon. Do any of the other houses have signature animals/plants/things mentioned?

The Lannister lion Tully fish and Baratheon stag have all been mentioned.

The Viewers Guide at HBO has information on the Great Families (including their sigils). Plus maps & other background stuff about the world of the TV show.

Some details* might* be considered spoilers here, since they haven’t been discussed in the episodes to date. But HBO’s Guide is actually pretty safe for newbies & a good refresher course for others. (Not to be confused with Others!)

Just the way of saying ‘law of the land’, but since there the law is derived from the King, it’s ‘the King’s justice’.

Favorite characters are a bad thing to have on this show.

Yeah, I think from a directional standpoint, it would have been much better to melt the gold and THEN to grab Viserys. It would have made it that much more unexpected. Trust me, Viserys would have stuck around. “A crown? A crown all for me? From your gold. That’s so generous. Thanks Drogo!”

I couldn’t help it - I laughed when they were melting the gold. Those suckers melted fast. It was like the coins were actually the chocolate ones I used to get at Easter.

I wasn’t laughing when Khal Drogo dumped it over Viserys though. Yeesh.

Correct. Although, as Sansa knows, there’s also a knight/executioner who holds the title “the King’s Justice,” the tongueless Ser Ilyn Payne: http://awoiaf.westeros.org/images/5/53/Ilyn_Payne.PNG

Good episode. Tyrion’s recitation of his childhood “crimes” was hilarious. Ned’s realization, after Sansa’s offhanded remark of Joffrey being nothing like King Robert, was well done. I liked Robert and Renly’s quarreling during the boar hunt. Jorah’s quiet courage in standing up to Viserys re: the dragon eggs was a powerful scene. The later “crowning” of Viserys was just what it should have been.

If favorite characters tend to bite it, I guess I’ll say my goodbyes to Ned, Arya and The Imp. If the opposite holds true The Queen and Ned’s wife will be around forever.

Yeah, I said it. I seriously dislike Cate.

You are not alone in that. Best thing you can say about Cat is that she’s not as bad as her sister.

It’s not merely that the gold melted so fast, it’s that it melted at all. Gold melts at over 1900 F (over 1000 C). as Gandalf rightly says in LOTR “Your little fire won’t even melt ordinatry gold”*. Nor would a campfire. Both Pepper Mill and I have done casting (Pepper used to cast gold, in fact), and we rolled our eyes at that. You really want to have a furnace for melting metals.

  • after which he tells Frodo to “Take it, it’s quite cool”, having not touched it himself – in the movie. I woulda called Gandalf on it, myself. In the book, of course, he does touch it, and speaks from experience, but Peter Jackson wanted to have touching the Ring being more powerful as a means of being controlled by it, so he changed things. He shoulda cut the line, theough, in that case.

That’s right! Bran stopped breast feeding when he was eight!
