I guess some book people think that way too. Varys explicitly said that he serves the realm, and Varys was explicitly lying. Or at the very best telling a “Jedi truth.”
You learn in book one/season one that Varys wants a civil war and chaos in Westeros so that Illyrio and his Essos crew can invade. In book five, Varys specifically murders a competent and relatively decent ruler of Westeros. Varys explicitly tells his victim that he can’t let him live because he’s a nice guy and a competent leader and what Varys needs is a crappy ruler who everybody hates so that he can be replaced.
Does anyone knows if Joffrey’s marriage will be shown during this season?
I doubt it. The Red Wedding is the second to last episode, so it seems likely that Joffery’s wedding will be pushed to season 4.
Thanks. Then, I guess that the plot development in King’s landing will be very slow, since I don’t remember much happening in the book between Blackwater battle and Joffrey’s marriage (though perhaps I’m misremembering).
They’ve added the Theon story from book 4. Now the TV show is spoiling the books for me. Last I read, Theon was dead.
They did the same for some by moving the Cat/Jaime scene from ACoK into S1, and moving up some of the Robb stuff in S2. I’ve seen people try reading along just ahead of the show, and it’s increasingly becoming impossible. And this isn’t even from book 4. It’s book 5
I assumed he was dead too when I read ASoS, but it’s never actually said that he is.
Tyrion’s wedding, for one.
Theon’s finger skin is presented to another character at some point in A Storm of Swords.
It looks like they’re going to work on Sansa’s story and her interactions with the Tyrell’s. They might develop Cersei’s relationship with the Kettleblacks and her plotting against Margaery, because they’re never going to let Lena Heady just cool her heels, being dismissed by Joff all season. And Ros and TV-Shae are something of a wild card. They may be doing some interesting background work for/against Littlefinger.
I like how they’re drawing plots from 4 & 5 and tightening the hell out of them, but at the same time, it’s really becoming a breakneck pace! I wonder if they’ll be able to juggle all of this successfully. (And at this rate, if Season 4 of the show will involve Winds of Winter material!)
I honestly look forward to the season in which the show passes the books. We’d all be in delicious, spoiler-free uncharted territory then, and supposedly the showrunners possess the plotpoints for books that have yet to - and perhaps will never - be completed.
Was anyone else a little put off by Thoros of Myr’s personality? I always pictured him as more devout and staid than that.
I’ve only read the series once, so I need a quick refresher on this:
The story Cat told about wishing Jon Snow dead, then him getting the pox as a boy, and her praying for his recovery: was that in the books?
Nope. I don’t think Cat ever had one kind thought or word for Jon Snow in the books.
Yes.
Hopefully, once we realizes that magic is back, we’ll at least see a costume change so he’s not so generic.
Which one is Thoros?
He was the main guy from the Brotherhood that was talking to Arya, Hot Pie, and Gendry.
In case you forgot from the books, he’s a priest of R’hollor, like Melisendre, but he sort of “lost the faith” and became a bit of a drunkard. When big magic came back to the world, he found he had the power to bring someone back to life, and has been doing so to Beric Dondarrion frequently.
They seem to have melded Thoros with the horny bard as well. So that waters down his character further. Did they omit Lem, or was that him at the inn?
Thanks. I’m remembering him now. I couldn’t keep the characters straight when I read the books but now that the series is changing/melding some of them I’m getting really confused.
The whole band put me off, in fact. It’s just “Robin Hood in Westeros” at this point.
Gotta love the spoiler-free thread! “It’s so painfully obvious that Theon’s father is the one torturing him.” Eh, no.
Actually, a question about that. I didn’t actually read all of book 2. Did Ramsay pose as a savior to Theon in the book? God, that is such a dick move. I love how beyond-all-reason evil he is. (And thrilled to see the eminently creepy Iwan Rheon playing him!)
