Game of Thrones "Winterfell" 8.01 4/14/19

Hope not…he’s been burned before. Pretty sure that was in the show.

At a minimum, in season 1 his hand was burned when he threw a lamp at the wight that was attacking Lord Commander Mormont.

With Jon being only half Targaryen, he wouldn’t necessarily have all of their special inherited abilities.

I found it rather good. After the drop in quality in the two previous season, I was a bit afraid for this one. The opening scene was really good.

I wish they would have given a pass to the comic “dragon ride” scene. Doesn’t fit the atmosphere of the show, especially at this point in the storyline. Not fitting at all for this kind of drama. I also find their love story style and attitude a bit too teenagey.

I’m wondering what they’re going to do with Daenerys being Jon’s aunt. I’m not so sure they’ll be willing to show a successful aunt/nephew love story and happily ever after stuff. Makes me suspect that one of them will die. Likely Jon because Daenerys can bear a child if she survives and he doesn’t, so ensuring continuity.

Like a previous poster, I think that Daenerys is a deeply flawed ruler, and doesn’t deserve to be judged as such a great queen.

I hope that they’ll spare us a Gendry/Arya love story. Doesn’t fit Arya. But I guess we won’t escape it, especially since the public seems to want it. And please no Brienne/Tormund. In fact, the less love stories, the better.

On the overall, I’m rather optimistic, but the show will have to be extremely fast paced for the remaining 6 episodes to cover everything. Especially since a lot of this time will be dedicated to battle scenes. I wish they’d have build up the whole series differently. We had extremely slow paced seasons, and for the last two, they race to make everything fit and tie the loose ends (see the anticlimatic death of Littlefinger to get rid of the character).

I don’t get it. Wasn’t there a scene in the last season showing Cersei having a spontaneous abortion??? She’s still pregnant?

If I remember correctly, in the show, Edmure died when the Tully’s castle was taken.

No, I don’t recall anything like that. There’s been some question if she is really pregnant, but nothing to indicate a miscarriage.

You’re thinking of Brynden Tully, the Blackfish. Edmure, the actual head of the Tully clan, ordered the garrison of Riverrun to surrender because Jaime offered him and his infant son survival as hostages at Casterly Rock. After Riverrun was in his hands, Walder Frey didn’t honor the deal and threw him back in his cell. He was presumably still there when Arya killed the Freys, but if he was released after that it hasn’t been mentioned. As I said, if he hasn’t surfaced by now I don’t think he’ll be mentioned again. We really haven’t heard anything much about the Riverlands since then.

If Edmure and his son aren’t still alive, Bran, Sansa, and Arya may be the closest heirs to the Tully lands via Catelyn.

Is it being suggested Cersei is lying about it?

I could see her doing it. Especially since he run-in with the witch as a child didn’t mention a fourth kid.

Lord Royce (I had to look that up) from the Eyrie, who was in charge of Robin’s training, is at Winterfell so Robin may be around. Maybe we will see him later as a wight.

I liked that they got the Aegon reveal out quickly. But I guess this will cause a rift with Sam and Jon since Sam’s now pissed at Danerys.

I’m glad Bran immediately told Danerys that the Night King has Viserion. I was wondering if anyone was going to bring that up.

The reveal that Jon can ride a dragon didn’t happen the way I expected (in battle). That should add a little weight to the Sam/Bran claim since everyone thinks only Targaryens can ride them. And Drogon glaring at Jon was funny. I wish we had gotten a better reaction shot from the guys on the ground (holy shit Jon’s riding a dragon!).

It was great to actually see Winterfell. I didn’t realize that the weirwood tree was within the compound. I always thought they were going somewhere outside.

The whole thing with Euron bores me. I hope he dies soon. I was surprised that it wasn’t snowing in Kings Landing. It was when Jaime left.

Episode title is Winterfell, according to various internet sources.

I believe, based on nothing in particular, that we will see Edmure again. He may be Cersei’s hostage, he may be free, but I think he still has a role to play. He’s too big a loose end.

Grey Worm gets his cock back (a reanimated wight one maybe?) and sits on the throne with Gilly?
Cause thats about the only ending I have not seen proposed

Will they bring back Illyn Payne so Arya can kill him? He’s one of the few on her list that haven’t died, at least that we know.

Indeed.

I thought there was a scene when she wakes up in blood-stained sheets, and took that as an indication of miscarriage.

Almost certainly not coming back.

The guy who played him got cancer, was expected to live less than a year. They wrote him out of the show at that point. As luck would have it, he survived after they took a baby-sized tumor out of his gut. Even so, show is complicated enough as it is. Bringing him back at this point would just be confusing.

There was a scene, several years ago, when Sansa woke up in bloody sheets and Shae helped her get rid of them. But that was her getting her first menstrual period and thus being old enough to be married to Joffery.

And yet they continued to have Arya recite her list with his name in it.

A few more things from mulling overnight:

I see an echo between Sam/Danny/Jon and Ollie/Ygritte/Jon, and I wonder if Jon may come to regret it just as much.

Jon doesn’t seem to be able to see things from other people’s POV, does he? Why can’t Ollie just overlook that Ygritte helped slaughter his family because Jon thinks the Watch needed the Wildlings. Now it’s why can’t Sam just overlook that Danny slaughtered his father and brother? Because to Jon, that clearly doesn’t matter at all compared with how much he thinks they need Danny.

And on a bigger scale, to Jon it’s obvious that he should have bent the knee to Danny, so why is Sansa – and all the Northerners – being stroppy about it?

OTOH, when it’s about HIM, well, that’s not so quickly put aside. When Sam tells him the truth about his parentage, ideally he should have just said the war is what isimportant, told him that revealing his actual ancestry would just cause cracks and strife in the Alliances, and sworn Sam (and Bran) to keep their mouths shut about it.
Cersei and her maybe pregnancy. The way they showed her cupping her belly at the end of last season, you’d have thought she was far enough along to have a belly bump. But she didn’t look significantly pregnant this episode – and Euron should have gotten a very close look while having sex with her, and his comment about putting a prince in her belly shows he wasn’t at all suspicious.

Surely it would have taken at least a couple of months for him to sail to Bravos, hire the Golden Company, have them gather up their forces and get to his ships from wherever their previous engagement was, and sail back to King’s Landing? Not to mention the Dothraki and Unsullied had to march all the way from KL up to Winterfell, since most of Danny’s fleet got burned by Euron last season.
Cersei hiring Bron to kill Tyrion and Jaime: will Bron remember Tyrion telling him that whatever anyone offered to pay Bron for killing Tyrion, Tyrion would pay double?

Of course, Bron may not think Tyrion is in any position to keep that promise, while Cersei handed over chests of gold on the barrel head.

The biggest problem isnt Jon and Dany knowing about Jons claim to the throne. Its the Northern Lords learning. Sansa will probably find out somehow.

I suspect at Jaimes ‘trial’, Sansa or Sam will blurt out the truth and there will be much harrumphing. In an echo of Jon being stuck at Dragonstone, suddenly its Dany in this Northern land with a lot of people questioning the entirety of her legitimacy…AND then Tormund will burst in and thank God we have the Night King to put all this behind us. Hopefully he kills enough people that we never have to talk about this again.
