Game On! NHL: October 2010

Wisniewski gets two games for a vulgar pantomime. Hjalmarsson gets two games for a nasty hit the League has made clear all off-season they’re trying to stamp out. Cammalleri gets one game for twice using his stick as a weapon on Niederreiter.

Spin, NHL Wheel of Justice, spin!

No kidding. Price deserved that win, and he’s the only reason it wasn’t a blow out. What does he have to do to get his D to actually play til the end and clear rebounds? He can make the first spectacular save, and maybe a second, but sooner or later, someone has to get the puck out of there and let him get out of the splits again! The rest of the team has to be better - you can’t ask for much more than performances like the past couple of games.

I am also tired of hearing “Quelle chance manqué par Pouliot!” Freaking score already!

Is anyone surprised that Pascal Leclaire is injured already?

I shouldn’t be.

I am extremely pissed at the Hurricanes for running him twice in two minutes. Looks like they got what they were after, as they never so much as touched Elliot until mid-way through the second period.

And let’s be clear. He made a vulgar gesture at Sean Avery, a man whose very existence in the NHL is a vulgar gesture. I mean really. The only reason he should’ve been suspended was for not simply pounding the snot out of Avery.

The Stars beat the Red Wings 4-1 and the Stars dominated the game. Modano supposedly got a good reception from the fans at the beginning of the game, although I wasn’t able to see it since I was at work.

We’re halfway though October and I’d say there is sufficient interest in a monthly NHL thread!

The worst part is that Dallas didn’t really dominate. They only had fifteen shots total. Problem is that Detroit let every shot count. Defensive players out of position and Brad Stuarts skates meant that Ozzie had no chance. Just about every goal opened with “turnover in the neutral zone” and ended with “<insert name here> wide open…scores!!!” It’s this sort of consistently bad play that makes me question Babcocks effectiveness as a coach. The players are simply not doing the simple things that they should be doing, and with the talent level that Detroit is supposed to have that means the coach isn’t doing his job.

Or it just means that Osgood sucks.

No argument here.

The Canadian media has gone absolutely crazy over a pretty minor hit that Nick Foligno of the Ottawa Senators threw last night. Pat Dwyer reached back to pick up a potential breakaway pass and Foligno hit him. If Foligno doesn’t throw a hit there Dwyer’s off to the races with only Erik Karlsson having a chance to cut him off. But TSN absolutely freaked out about the hit and so Foligno got tagged with a fine to shut them up.

The whole situation is completely bizarre to me. Foligno made a good defensive play on a player about to go on a dangerous rush. If what he did is illegal you might as well forget being able to play defence in the NHL.

TSN tries to counteract the HNIC “Hit him, HIT HIM! Break his knee, TEAR HIS HEAD OFF!!!1!11!!” Maybe this time they went too far?

Nonsense. On the first two goals, defensemen were out of position leaving an entire side of the net wide open with no coverage on the open man. That’s a basic. The third goal went in off Brad Stuarts skate. Ozzie had absolutely no chance. Simply put: the team bailed on him. Three out of four goals that you can’t blame Osgood for at all. Saying that Osgood sucks simply excuses the rest of the team for it’s defensive flaws.

It must be a might bit frosty in Hell. The Leafs win again to go to 4-0. They didn’t get their 3rd win last season until the 15th game.

The last time the Leafs started a season 4-0, Bill Clinton was the President, and OJ hadn’t killed his wife yet.

I think he was speaking more in a general, overall sense rather than just specific to that one game. Osgood does suck.

Still no. He’s a solid goalie. Not spectacular, but certainly not even bad much less “suck.” He certainly proved that the last two years the wings made the finals (one win and one game seven loss) Odds are good that he won’t outright steal games like Roy or Brodeur, but if the team plays well in front, he’ll hold up his end.

The biggest problem that he has now is that he overcommits to one side to cut down the angle leaving one side of the net open. Not a huge deal if the defense does what they are supposed to, but the way Detroit has been playing for the last couple years now it turns into one.

And the NHL goes and proves my point by giving Letang 5-and-a-game for a completely clean check the next night. Yikes.

Does anyone know of a website which lists the rosters of NHL teams by year? I’ve been watching a lot of classic games and I wonder if there is an easier way information on historical team rosters than typing “1998 Toronto Maple Leafs” into Wikipedia.

I don’t particularly have any beef with him, nor do I watch him or the Red Wings with enough regularity to have a strongly developed feel for his game, but that he’s benefited from playing behind one of the most consistently dominant teams in the league over his career and still manages the pedestrian numbers he does speaks to him being less than solid, and more likely sucky.

This article, for instance, does a pretty good job showing how Osgood has had the 5th easiest goalie job since 1955 because of the team he played for being able to provide larger margins of error for him.

He may not “suck” in the sense that he’s made it to the NHL as many hopefuls have not and he’s managed to have quite a lengthy career, but comparatively, he’s below average. I daresay that most NHL goalies would surpass his contributions if it were them playing behind the Red Wings teams he has had the luxury of inflating his numbers and extending his career.

Fortunately they didn’t suspend him. (Of course, that should silence the whole, “Bettman’s biased towards the Penguins!” bullshit. Not to mention that Letang doesn’t have the rep as a dirty player at all.)
(MATT COOKE JUST SCORED!!! FIVE TO ONE!!! YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSS EAT IT FLYERS!!!)
Okay, where was I?
