That is, in your typical first-person shooter, are you supposed to kill all enemies, or simply get to the end intact? Often the strategy is dictated for you: In some games either it’s impossible to finish without blasting all opponents out of your way, or you’re playing for points where you want the highest body count possible. In other games the enemies respawn forever so there’s no point in trying to keep killing them. The question then is what should you do when avoiding combat is optional. I ask because I’m currently playing a game where there just doesn’t seem to be enough ammo available to kill everything you come across- unless you want to try to counter ranged attacks with a hand weapon, in which case there isn’t enough health and armor available. Now I could [del]skulk like a coward[/del] bypass enemy positions, but I never feel like I’ve truly beaten the level/episode unless I’m standing knee-deep in the dead* at the end.
*I never saw the point of playing Doom in Nightmare (respawn) mode just for minimum completion time.
