Gamergate

Trololol!

These allegations have been debunked in previous posts.

Well you see, there’s this concept called “news”. When a particular issue or event becomes “news”, i.e., gains a lot of public attention, then a lot of different media outlets start writing about it simultaneously, often with “roughly the same talking points and narrative”.

If that really strikes you as a form of journalistic misconduct, then I’d love to see what you’re going to write on the ongoing massive journalistic conspiracy to promote “roughly the same talking points and narrative” about Ebola.

You don’t have a clue about how this forum works, do you? Even here in the BBQ Pit, the forum rules sticky explicitly states:

If you made such a threat, your post would almost certainly be reported, and you would be warned by a moderator. If your behavior was perceived as genuinely threatening intended harm, it could go further than that. AFAIK, the SDMB has occasionally got outside authorities involved for really inappropriate behavior (though my information on that goes no deeper than vaguely remembered rumor).

Don’t like being held accountable for your behavior like that? Oh, too bad, I thought you would have a thicker skin.

I’ve read dumber things on the Internet, but not in October.

Any October.

Go back and read the thread. Your points above about the supposed corruption are stupid even if they hadn’t been exhaustively debunked here and elsewhere. Your point about people having thicker skin about death threats is just too stupid to live–and yes, I’m suggesting killing your point with fire, just to be sure.

We’re really going to do this?

Quinn sleeping with a journalist who gave her free publicity in two articles. THIS DID NOT HAPPEN
Quinn’s own dubious actions in helping shut down a competitor firm. THIS DID NOT HAPPEN
Half a dozen or more articles appearing in different publications on the same day, all with roughly the same talking points and narrative. Basically the narrative of the death of gamers. THIS DID NOT HAPPEN

Death threats are ten a penny online. They are fairly regular to phone in also. Are they to be welcomed? No. But if I right now on SD threatened that I was gonna kill you, cut your privates off and shove em down your throat would you really be thinking it a big deal? No, I would hope you have a thicker skin. THIS IS DISGUSTING AND YOU WOULD BE BANNED FROM THE SDMB FOR WRITING SUCH A POST

…the people who keep repeating this also started a movement because they got butt hurt over someone stating “gamers are dead.”

Sorry, it did happen. Note the shared words in the headlines - death, end, gamers(some nice violent imagery). Coincidentally all of them just happening to take the same editorial line:

“‘Gamers’ don’t have to be your audience. ‘Gamers’ are over.” by Leigh Alexander (8/28, approx 10:28 AM):
“The End of Gamers” by Dan Golding (8/28, no time, this possibly was posted before Alexander’s piece)
“Gaming is Leaving ‘Gamers’ Behind’” by Joseph Bernstein (8/28, 3:29 PM)
“The death of the ‘gamers’ and the women who ‘killed’ them” by Casey Johnson (8/28, 7:00 PM)
“A Guide to Ending ‘Gamers’” by Devin Wilson (8/28, 7:57 PM)
“We Might Be Witnessing The ‘Death of An Identity’” by Luke Plunkett (8/28, 8:00 PM)
“This Guy’s Embarassing Relationship Drama Is Killing the ‘Gamer Identity’” by Mike Peark (8/29, no time)

You keep fucking that chicken.

And? Do you think they all got together and posted these articles at the same time? Half those writers were probably pissed because their thunder got stolen by someone a bit more famous.

…lets forget about the articles for a midnight and lets just clarify something: are you admitting you are wrong about everything else?

And why has Leigh Alexander been singled out for hate, and the other authors ignored?

One of these things is not like the others
Six of these things are kind of the same
But one of these things is not like the others
And now it’s time to play our game
It’s time to play our game!

The accusations you made about Quinn were false.

And seriously, this is the hill you’re going to fight over? That a handful of opinion pieces disrespected you? Death threats because you got your feelings hurt?

I don’t know. Which is why I limited my initial statement to "I think enough has been brought up to at least be concerned with journalistic integrity in the industry".

It certainly would not be the first time press campaigns have occurred. Journalists have colluded in such attacks long before this particular controversy. I really am surprised the posters on here are not at least concerned about journalistic integrity. We know journalists often get too cosy with the subjects they are writing on. This especially goes on in niche journalism such as sports, celebrity gossip, politics, business and so on.

On the off chance that the point you’re making is that the rest of the listed authors are male, Ars Technica’s Casey Johnston might disagree.

LOL … What you’re talking about isn’t “journalistic integrity”. It people writing stuff that hurts your feelings.

There are lot of real issues regarding journalistic integrity in the industry. But they involve the cozy relationship between AAA publishers and review sites. GamerGate “integrity” issues are just a fig leaf to hide their real issues: hurt feelings and misogyny.

And that also is wrong. It is quite routine for multiple people to write about the same subject in the same way simply because that very thing is what everyone is talking about. This is zero evidence for a problem with journalistic integrity. It’s simply the reality of public discourse.

In the other hand, I’m not surprised to see this lane firm of concern trolling being used to justify a vile reactionary campaign of hate. It’s a common tactic of propagandists.

Speaking as a journalist, I have many concerns about journalists and ethics. This doesn’t even come close to being a concern. People often write about things going on in the world at the same time.

In this case there’s absolutely nothing suspicious about it. All of the writers cited above are reacting to the same public event. That they are involved in a public conversation about it—perhaps some of them even with one another—is not in the least problematic.

Wait, I thought the hate was being directed at women in general, not just this one person. Either gamergaters are misogynist, or they are only picking on Leigh Alexander. In one sentence these people are accused of hating an entire gender, next they only hate a single woman. One minute gamerate is hating too much, next minute it is not hating enough. Anti gamergate people cant have it both ways. Unless you are deliberately being ignorant you will know that many people have called for numerous journalists to be sacked, apologize, or to step down over this issue.

The cozy relationship thing has always baffled me. There are 1000s of game review sites out there. Most of them are very small. A small portion are very big. But aside from a few jokes about IGN’s 1-10 scale actually starting at 7, I’ve rarely seen any examples of what this “cozy relationship” entails.

Parties with booze… OK. Free swag packaged with review copies… sure. But the movie industry is much much worse and if you need a keychain to sway a reviewer around to liking your game, the real quality of it is going to be found out sooner rather than later. And then both sides are in the shit.

And all the potential concerns you named have been amply aired and investigated. None of them have produced any actual evidence of misconduct on the part of journalists.

When people keep bringing up the same repeatedly-debunked points over and over again, they’re not “concerned”, they’re conspiracy theorists in the making.

And when they use vile obscene abuse, spamming, doxxing, and threats of violence against their opponents, they’re not “concerned”, they’re thugs. (Or terrorists, if they actually seek to carry out such threats.)

Yes, I want to know if Fuzzy Wuzzy admits that those accusations about Quinn are lies.

…I asked you a direct question. Is evasion going to be your standard response? Because if it is, then it is quite clear Gamergate is the right cause for you.

Are you admitting you were wrong about everything else?

Why was Leigh Alexander singled out?
