GamersGate Void

GamersGate is releasing a new PC gaming program called “Void”. The concept is that you have a slot in your account you can fill with a game, free of charge. You watch an ad whenever you launch the game and the game in your slot expires after a set number of days (I think it starts at 30). At which point you could pick the same game again or a new game. You can pay money to upgrade to more slots, faster expiring slots, a slot on your friend’s account you control (so you can give him multiplayer games you want to play together), etc. It’s basically an ad-supported “rental”.

Right now, the game selection is decent in quantity but nothing of quality you’d draw in an audience with. They say they’ll expand their catalog to include new releases and the like but right now it’s a lot of bargain level picks.

I know there’s a lot of people here who commonly purchase games for download and others who hate the concept for various reasons. Would a service like this interest you? Would it if it had recent AAA titles rather than stuff from the Big Lots software rack? I’ve enough games in my personal backlog that I’m not looking for more right now but I thought the concept was interesting.

As much great stuff as is available from places like GOG, Steam, or GameTap (does anyone use GameTap anymore?) for $10 or less, it’s not something I would probably be interested in…especially if the selection is limited to ‘classics’ like Extreme Paintbrawl.

You can, in defense of Big Lots, sometimes find decent old titles on their software rack :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s true. Maybe I should have said Office Depot. Their software rack is usually full of strange educational games, point-and-click adventures and “1000 Casino Games in One!” titles.
