The Neverhood. Celtling loves it, so we tool around in there often.
Do Zork or PC Adventure count?
Yeah, I think so. They’re really more puzzle games, but they have a definite end to them.
I’ve played numerous text adventures multiple times as well. Often times to reexperience the writing (Adam Cadre’s “Photopia” and “Shrapnel” are two that spring to mind.)
Dark Forces
Sid Meyer’s Pirates
GTA Vice City
Doom/Doom2
Wolfenstien 3D
Star Control II. Once back shortly after it came out, on my roommate’s computer. Once maybe a year or two ago. The first time, I kept an extensive notebook of coordinates, codewords, etc. The second time, I looked spoilers up on the internet.
Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy 6
Chrono Trigger
Halo 1
Not played it—my computer is a bit GPU challenged, and I don’t have a console. One more thing to buy when I get a better job. Hell, “Abandoned Armies” is an awesome mod for Flashpoint, but it drives my framerate to a crawl.
Needless to say, I haven’t been able to play ArMA (stupid name), or its sequel.
I just want a FPS where, if you get shot, that’s it. No medpacks, no wait and be healed; just don’t get shot. Some of the best parts of Flashpoint were me staring at a tiny glob of green-brown pixels 250 meters off and trying to figure out if it was a bush or that bastard with the SVD that keeps killing my guy with the Gustav. I’d walk around after playing that game, and find my eye being drawn to every bush, hollow, and ditch, and how far they were from me.
Gray Ghost, you might want to check out Brothers In Arms: The Road to Hill 30. I don’t know if it was ever available for the PC. But it is unforgiving.
I replay a lot of the games I buy. When I beat Brothers in Arms I sadi to myself, “Yay! I beat it! That was awesome! Now I will never play it again.”
Quite a few over the years, but the first that come to mind;
the Kings Quest series. Even Mask of Eternity.
The Legend of Dragoon for the original playstation. 4 disc game that I’ve played several times.
I almost never play a game twice after I’ve beaten its main storyline. The sole exception to this has been the original Daggerfall. I’ve probably played it 3-4 times over the years.
Super Mario Brothers
Super Mario Brothers 2 (US and Lost Levels)
Super Mario Brothers 3
Super Mario World
Wolfenstein 3d
Ultimate Doom
Doom 2
Sonic the Hedgehog 1-3 and Knuckles
If fighting games count, I’ve gone through Mortal Kombat 1-3 and Trilogy several times. Each character has a different ending.
If racing games count, I’ve gone through Need for Speed 2 and 3 several times. There are elimination modes and seasons and stuff like that.
I sold my SNES last year, but before I did I played through Super Mario World again from start to finish, and SMB3 off Super Mario All Stars. What a great game! I got a Wii for my birthday this year and am loving it, but I’m finding Super Mario Galaxy a bit disappointing. Sure, it’s good fun, but Mario ought to be 2D dammit! (It’s much more difficult to accurately squish enemies in 3D)
Actually Dragon Rising runs very well, doesn’t tax my computer very much at all. I have a Athlon dual core with 4GB RAM, WinXP, and a GeForce GTX 250. And there is plenty of shooting at little dots 250+ meters away. A lot more foliage too. Most of the fun comes from playing with my friend co-op or team deathmatch though. The single-player campaign is flawed, but there are plenty of user-created missions, and they are tiny downloads because they’re just coordinates and scripts.
I’ll probably try ARMA2 pretty soon.
