Gawker to shut down next week

That’s pretty much it - they’re shutting down following the sale of properties to Univision to pay for the Hulk Hogan case.

“And nothing of value was lost.”

I’m surprised Univision didn’t sell it. Why didn’t Denton find some backers and buy it?

Most interesting thing I’ve learned from all this is that Univision owns The Onion.

Gawker, in my experience, was garbage although I understand that a few of the properties I never visited were less trash such as the automotive site. So I hope those people can find new homes or a resurrected site.

I’ll miss Gizmodo and io9. I hope they find a home somewhere else.

Oh, they are fine. It’s Gawker.com that is going under.

OK, cool.

The fewer tabloid sites the better.

Jalopnik and Jezebel are the only Gawker Media properties that need to continue. Deadspin and Gizmodo should be put in a raft with a weeks supply of food and set adrift.

I’m sure the issue is exposure to liability. Far easier to shutdown a culture that just lost you a hundred forty million dollars than it is to change it. I’m positive the agreement has strong liability protection provisions for Univision in the event of future lawsuits.

Essentially it is the combined value of the other six properties that are worth a hundred and thirty five million dollars not Gawker. Gawker is worth nothing.

Why buy something just to shut it down?

They bought other media properties in the deal. Those were the ones with a hundred thirty million.

So, can I read other sites in the Gawker network without feeling dirty now? Lifehacker and io9 lost me years ago (low bar for content and spoilery headlines, respectively). But I did enjoy Gizmodo and Kotaku until I decided to boycott them entirely over Gawker’s behavior.

Mechanically, The Bismarck was an amazing ship.

I’m glad that it was sunk too.

Thank God. io9 is some quality stuff.

The tabloid stuff I can live without. And it’s a crowded field, few will notice.

Jezebel? Really?

I’ll take the worst that Deadspin has to offer before I ever go to Jezebel. You almost have to check your privilege before you read anything there.

Eh. I like Kotaku and Jezebel, and sometimes io9.

Listening to men complain about Jezebel is usually amusing.
As far as Gawker goes, I wish we could send worthless pieces of shit like Nick Denton back to the UK in the bilge of a freighter. I can’t understand why we let Britain ship so much of their garbage over here.

io9 is my second online home after the SDMB, so I’m very glad it’s staying. Though it is a shell of its former self with very few decent contributors anymore.

Yay. Although it’s not what it was when Newitz and Anders helmed it, it’s still my third-favourite corner of the web (after here and Cracked)
