Gay Main Characters in SF

I am not a SF expert, so I am having a hard time thinking of any human gay characters in Science Fiction movies/TV series.

I think Dr. Smith was, but that’s just my opinion.

There are LOTS of gay main characters in SF.

Oh, you don’t mean that “SF.” Oops

Captain Jack from Doctor Who and Torchwood, although he might be said to be omnisexual rather than gay.

This is a bit of a stretch but Lafeyette from True Blood and Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer would qualify.

Northstar from Marvel comics.

Possibly Friday from Heinlein’s book of the same name, though I think she was more of an omnisexual ala Captain Jack.

Marvel’s Rawhide Kid came out in 2003.

Practically everything written by S.M. Stirling has at least one badass-warrior lesbian in it; seems to be his favorite kinda character. Also throws in gay male characters sometimes, e.g., in The General series, one of Raj Whitehall’s colonels, and the colonel’s BF, a young ensign.

Albus Dumbledore

Baron Harkonnen

I came in to say Captain Jack. I know there are more though…

It’s a lot easier to find in the written literature.

Gaby in John Varley’s Titan was. She had a big crush on the protagonist, Cirocco Jones, who sort-of reciprocated.

Theodore Sturgeon’s “The World Well Lost” (from 1952) has several gay characters, portrayed with some sensitivity (and some homophobia).

OTOH, Cordwainer Smith’s “The Crime and Glory of Commander Suzdahl” (from 1964) has plenty of gay characters, but is extremely homophobic (but it’s Cordwainer Smith, so it’s not usually criticized for it).

“The Man Who Folded Himself” by David Gerrold has male/male sex, though the character is making love to himself (from different timelines), so one question is whether it’s homosexuality or masturbation.

Now Dumbledore we were told i s gay, but there is nothing really gay about him in the books to be honest.

I have no idea who the second person is, which I am sure reflects more upon me than anything else.

A particularly nasty piece of work from the Dune books.

Steve Jinx in Warehouse 13

Camille Wray in Stargate: Universe

Original Cindy - Dark Angel
Of those, only Camille gets to live out her gay lifestyle on screen.

Barbara Hambly has a flamboyantly gay Evil Prince in the Windrose chronicles. A subplot is about how the Prince must marry and beget an heir, but the Prince has no sexual interest in women. Hambly also has a few lesbian characters in her books, as well.

The Baron Harkonnen is a sadistic boylover, who favors youths that look like Paul Atreides. I don’t THINK that he has sex with actual kids, but rather with young teens. He’d probably have sex with little kids if only to hear them squeal, but what really turns his crank are teen boys who resemble The Fated One.

The main character in Egan’s “Teranesia” is gay, so are many of the characters in Haldeman’s “The Forever War.”

Captain Janeway

Jenny in Doctor Who is a lesbian married to Vashtra, a lizard woman from the dawn of Earth’s time.

A lot of these are supporting characters or villains, not main characters, except Captain Jack in Torchwood (in Doctor Who he’s a supporting character).

Vanyel Ashkevron is the protagonist of Mercedes Lackey’s “The Last Herald-Mage” fantasy trilogy.

It’s tough to categorize the people of the planet of *Gethen *(Winter) in The Left Hand of Darkness.

They’re all one sex, except when they go into estrus, where one partner remains ‘male’ (during non-sexy periods of life they’re outwardly male), and the other becomes female. I’d argue that Estraven, who is one of these people, is a co-main character with Genly-Ai.

I was going to reply to the thread saying, “In San Francisco?!? There’s plenty!!!”

This, however, is less my area.

Maybe Spock counts for both!
