I would have been amazed if this had happened in the US. Not that there isn’t bigotry galore, but the taboo against digging up corpses does have more points these days than being gay.
I wish there were an easy way to address this, but there are other beliefs in Africa that are just as horrific (killing albinos for their “magical” organs, raping virgins to cure AIDS). I don’t even know where to start.

The southern half of Africa is predominately christian and is extremely homophobic as well. Northern Africa is predominately Muslim. Homophobia does not seem to care about what religion is prevalent. It only requires ignorance to spread. Countries with lower education rates have higher instances of homophobia.
Uganda, home of the kill the gays bill, is 84% christian.
