...Gay Marriage now legal in New Zealand.

…just been announced: by vote 77-44. Happy days down under!

Excellent.

Awesome!

Woohoo!!!

Not everyone will be able to watch the video as its NZ locked: but here was the announcement the bill had passed, and the Waiata that followed. Listened to most of the debate tonight: wonderful to hear the “conservative” MP’s speaking out on behalf of the bill, including people like John Banks who I never would have dreamed of supporting the bill. Maurice Williamson gave a wonderfully funny speech and Tau Henare destroyed Winston Peters in an old school off-the-cuff one minute rebuttal. And to my American friends: Banks, Williamson and Henare would be classified as “right wing” and they heartily supported the bill that was introduced by parliaments left wing.

Very proud to be a Kiwi tonight: well done Louisa Wall for introducing the bill and working so hard to get it passed. Kia kaha.

Parliament TV has uploaded it to Youtube where anyone can watch it. In fact the whole debate is uploaded in 20 parts there.

Here’s Maurice Williamson’s great speech.

FTR, the final debate about SSM in the French parliament began today too. It will be voted next tuesday (chances of it being rejected are nil).

Well done, you all. Of course, if the Republican argument has any merit the next step will be to let people marry sheep.

Those sexy, sexy sheep.

…cheers man.

This was the funniest speech of the night: Tau Henarein rebuttal to his former boss Winston Peters. There is a lot of history between those two.

That was legalised quite some time ago. What this event has actually done is proved the theory that legalised sheep marriage would eventually lead to gay marriage.

Well, at least the right end of the Democrats. Mmm… yeah, maybe a little further right. We don’t really have true US style right wingers. I was somewhat (happily) surprised to see Banks supporting.

Excellent to see this pass.

In high school, I had this *really *hippy teacher who taught us Thoreau and Emerson and at one point had us all put our heads down on our desks to mentally ask a bee to leave the classroom. We had to read the 100th Monkey too. If you’re not familiar with this new age legend, lemme sum it up. There’s a chain of indepenedent islands which are inhabited by monkeys and a researcher. Every day, a surplus of fruit is dropped off on the sandy beaches for the monkeys to eat (kinda like Lost). Well, as it happens on one day, one of the monkeys on one of the islands decides to wash his fruit in the ocean to avoid eating sandy. Soon, other monkeys on the same island wash their fruit after watching him do it. Once the magical “100th monkey” does it, it created a global consciousness and all the monkeys on all of the islands began to do it.

The whole thing felt like shenanigans then as it feels like it now…but there’s that little part of me that thinks that the monkeys are finally understanding about gay marriage and that we’re starting to get to that tipping point.

There’s a long road still ahead of us, but it’s just wonderful to see the changes start to snowball.

But we’re still not allowed to have sex with ducks. :stuck_out_tongue:

(SFW… prob… just the Garfunkel and Oates song)

Well done to the Kiwis. There’ll be a lot of happy sheep at that news.

Anyway, nothing wrong with Gay Marriage, they have the right to be just as miserable as hetrosexuals

(just in case the attempted humour doesn’t translate, it’s a joke)

Ray “Banana Man” Comfort is from New Zealand. I wonder if this will make him move back?

Congratulations  and pre-congratulations to the French.

Lawmakers burst into song as the law passes

Welcome to our less and less exclusive club.

But can an elf marry a hobbit?
