Gay undertones in Ice Age

Maybe I’m just intrepreting things through my own filter, but did anyone else notice several gay undercurrents in the film?

The most noticeable, for me, was the Rhinos pair. Their relationship seemed gay to me – what with sharaing the salad and one guy saving the last dandelion for the other.

The other biggie was when one of the characters met Manny the Wolly Mammoth and Sid the Sloth with the human baby, he said something like “What, you couldn’t have your own, so you decided to adopt?”

I’m sure my 4-year-old son doesn’t catch those hints, but do other adults? While I’m certainly open to gay-undertones in mainstream movies, being gay and all, but is this risking a backlash?

Oh I’m sure the Rhinos were gay. I think they made it blatantly obvious. This is FOX after all and not Disney.

I doubt there will be a backlash. I think you just find it surprising because Disney has so dominated the animation market and mindset that people forget that animation is just a film genre and aimable for all and not some something solely for kids. I think FOX has different priorities and is trying to aim at a different (and more lucrative) audience. They were aiming for the teens with “Titan AE” which didn’t do so well so they aimed to a little more traditional market this time, at least in marketing. I would say the best audience for this movie would be 12 year olds. But that’s seeing it as a buddy film (think “Leathal Weapon” or “Rush Hour” or … I can’t think of a really good one) only animated and dumbed down pre-teens. Which might explain why I thought the movie was tired before it started.

Those weren’t undertones, but the one about adoption was obviously just a gay joke, not about gay characters.

The rhinos were flaming, though.

**I am watchen Iceage2 I always loved iceage since it came out ** andI am reading all the post and I agree with each one but did anyone chatch the out open remark [sees a giant butterfly as it takes off] I knew that guy when he was a caterpillar! I’m going to close this since it’s 14 years old, but feel free to start a new one if interest in this topic is still in demand.
