Gearheads, 60's/70's Detroit muscle or imports?

Exactly.

I one is willing to forget about the 1969 ZL-1 Camaro, Hemi Cuda, Yenko Anything, Shelby Anything (except that little 2.2 from the 1980s), etc., there are lots of great ways to build up a really cool old car. That list of motors I posted before gives you free reign to put whatever you are willing to risk within a pre-1973 car. Those engine bays were HUGE.

But, it is hard for me to really suggest that someone put a 500 HP engine with even more torque in an old car without giving it some serous thought. Not to mention investing in all the parts that will keep that 500 HP from turning you into the functional eqivalent of that guy in the urban legend that strapped a JATO rocket to his car…

Hey Beag, there’re head and cam combinations that’ll get you in the 450 range without swapping out much. I can’t talk for the F-body ECU as the Vette LS-1’s have better crank position sensing, but on the Vette side of things there’s no changing from the factory programming, fuel delivery or intake to handle it.

My ride was set up to be as fast as anything out there with street tires, since it’s a convertible, I didn’t much care about really high speed stuff, so it’s built for torque (500 crank ft-lbs) before hp (a theoretical 475) but it needs more dyno time and another round of PROM burning before I’m happy.

With the wrong size throttlebody, 24 lb injectors instead of 30, 8 degrees of retard due to detonation and a 120k mile clogged cat it was turning 14.1 at 5600 feet. That’s all been swapped out, I’m expecting mid 13’s, after which they’ll ask me to leave without a rollbar. The car is supposed to be good for mid 12’s at sealevel…not that it’ll ever see sea.

If what I think is true, one of them still being in business, these guys can hack the ECU. They did twin turbo kits on F-bods and Vettes as their specialty. That’s a good sign.

I really haven’t talked to them about it because I think I should replace the driveshaft, rear end, send best wishes to the clutch, get bigger wheels, and maybe even splurge on some Brembos before I think about putting more HP or TQ on the ground.

If I’m rolling along in first gear at 15, then floor it, the car will make a prolonged screeching sound until I shift to second. That’s not something I’m saying to impress anyone. It just means that any more power is going up in tire smoke until I do more than upgrade the LCAs in back, a rear crossmember, and some SFCs.

Balancing the car between power and stupidity is always the trick. Right now, other than maybe porting the old MAF and getting rid of the aftermarket one … long story that would pain even a gear head … I don’t see making any power upgrades until the hurricane season  is over.

When my wife’s G-35 Coupe, also a six speed, goes out of warranty…

I’ve been told that there are some Skyline engines, speed parts, or turbos that will fit. We might go from having the two most impractical daily drivers in the neighborhood to, well, the same thing but moreso.

UB,
I have found that if you run during test and tune the track guys do not seem to pay that much attention to the times. I have never been told to slow it down and I habe no roll bar in my car running 11’s.

475 HP in your Vette should be going near 120 mph in the 1/4, and I believe the NHRA correction factor for Mile High is about .9 seconds.

There is not much difference between 24# and 30# injectors. I would suggest either 36#/hr blue top injectors or 009 which are 43#/hr. The blue tops are very good injectors. That 8* of KR is not good, got to get that cat off. How much compression?

Well, since I just previewed and got REJECTED three times.

I would consider doing some kind of intermediate swap like you describe. Luckily, it’s all a known quantity now. There have already been plenty of guinea pigs. But. Once I crack the block a fuel pump, etc…, seems a small price to pay.

That’s so wrong, I can’t even explain it. OK, maybe I absentmindedly hit submit instead of preview the third time. OR, maybe some little rodent is MESSING with me.

The editing makes it even more confusing. Please, nothing to see here.

Breaking 14’s in a ragtop at Bandimere: They watch VERY closely. Friend with a 67 BB ragtop vette had a conversation the first time ans was done for the night. The GOOD news is, a hardtop qualifies you as a coupe…driveline loop + helmet and you’re good til you break into the 11’s. (not happening in THIS car.)

The difference between 24#'ers and 30#'ers is 20% With 24# injectors, the ECU would dial in full fuel trim and still detonate…30#'ers keep the fuel trim right as dead center. They’re the right size for the job. (Until we add NOS. )

The Knock was too much spark advance. PROM 1.1 fixed that. CR’s 10.5:1.

I WAS running headers, offroad pipe, and nothing else until I got the cat put on last week. The project was to make it emissions legal. What’s funny is, adding the cat REALLY improved part throttle response. And my eyes don’t burn on startup in the morning.

BTW, 475 crank sealevel HP, thru a slushbox (18-20%) at our altitude (3% per thousand feet) means it’s ‘only’ about 380 RWHP…now all I need is some gears…stock base was 2.73.
